I am pleased to report that applications have been filed by our village residents for all of the grant money in the Residential Rehabilitation Program. This will enable people to get much needed repairs done to their homes. In fact, we have a waiting list of people who will file applications when we secure additional grant money from Nassau County. The board of trustees and I appreciate your help in spreading the word to your neighbors about the merits of this program.
The past two Saturdays have been busy for all those volunteers who worked so diligently planting flowers on Main Street, Village Green, Northside Park and at the Melville Road/Main Street triangle. Beginning early in the morning, volunteers arrived at Village Green, broke up into groups and began hanging baskets, filling planters, planting flower beds and street sign baskets. The volunteers included residents from the Village and the greater Farmingdale area, Boy Scouts, junior firemen, high school students, members of the Village Board, Planning Board, Revitalization Committee and our Village DPW staff. Everyone had one purpose in mind – beautifying our Village. We are all deeply grateful for everyone’s help in achieving our goal of making our Village as attractive as we can for all to enjoy.
Unfortunately when our volunteers arrived early last Saturday morning we found that a number of the planters that had been put on Main Street and filled with soil in preparation for planting had been turned over into the roadbed. Additionally, some of the pots maintained by individual shopkeepers had also been displaced. Once again, I am asking for everyone’s help. If you see any misbehavior or misuse of property, please notify the Nassau County Police. They must be made aware of any such incidents.
This Monday we will celebrate Memorial Day and, our Village Fire Department has once again organized our Village Parade. I encourage everyone to come out and watch the parade which will begin at 10 a.m. on Bethpage Road and continue to Main Street ending at Village Green. Once all the marchers have passed the reviewing stand, our VFW will conduct memorial services honoring the men and women who have served our country which will be followed by the dedication of a new bench in the Village Green in memory of Blanche Oakes, longtime Farmingdale resident who was very active in the community and marched with the Girl Scouts in 55 Memorial Day parades. Blanche passed away last year.
