Free Mammograms/Cervical Exams
To uninsured women over the age of 40 provided by the Cancer Screening Partnership at Nassau University Medical Center. Free take-home test for colorectal cancer for women 50 and over and their partners will be distributed. These services are offered in conjunction with NUMC, North Shore/LIJ Health System, Planned Parenthood, South Nassau Communities Hospital and others, starting at 8:30 a.m. at NUMC, 2201 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow. Fundraiser for Jon Barber Jr.
The Jon Barber Jr. Fundraiser is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. at South Levittown Lanes, Silver and Tanners Lns. Price is $30 per person. Half goes to Jon and half goes towards bowling, food and non-alcoholic drinks. A cash bar is available. Jon suffers from pectus excavatum and kyphoscoliosis. He has had metal rods inserted into his chest and six different spine surgeries to fix this problem, including a tracheotomy. He currently is at a rehabilitation center in Woodmere. On Tuesday evenings you can fun with your family at a special bingo designed just for kids. At Temple Beth-El of Bellmore, 1373 Bellmore Rd., N. Levittown Community Council has put out a call for bands to audition to perform at the 12th Annual Lazy Days of Summer Picnic on July 11. The event is held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the East Village Green in Levittown. Lazy Days of Summer is a family event and all bands that audition will be considered to perform, but selection of the bands rests with the Levittown Community Council Board of Directors, whose decision is final. The opportunity is open to school, community and private bands. LI Crisis Center Seeks Volunteers
Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), the oldest 24-hour, seven-day-a-week crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline, is looking for volunteers for the upcoming Volunteer Counselor Training Program. Those interested in becoming a volunteer telephone crisis intervention counselor with LICC must first call 826-0244 to schedule an interview. No experience is necessary to volunteer and the hours are flexible to fit the individual needs of volunteers. All counselors must begin with orientation training. The free comprehensive orientation training program takes place over three evenings in LICC’s office in Bellmore. The next training sessions will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on July 9, 16 and 23. Local Marines/Families Golf Outing
The 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines Association will host its third Annual Golf Outing at Eisenhower Park on Aug. 3 to raise funds for the support of local Marine Reservists and their families. Play will take place on the Red and White Courses with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Check in begins at 10 a.m., followed by a barbeque lunch. Play will be followed by a buffet dinner at the Carltun. Proceeds will help the nonprofit organization provide comfort and support to family members of deployed Marines; care packages for those on the frontlines of the War on Terror; and if need be, funds will be used to assist wounded Marines or provide for the survivors of any killed in the line of duty. Midshore Mother’s Center Summer Fun 2009
The Midshore Mothers’ Center invites you to take part in the 11th Annual Summer Fun Program. You can register for six-week summer programs, Daddy and Me T-Ball and Mommy and Me in the Park or take advantage of the lower group rates at venues such as amusement parks, museums, aquariums and zoos. Reach for the Stars Teen Talent Search
The competition will be for solo vocal talent only. One hundred and twenty contestants will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis from applications received. Applications must be postmarked by June 24. Auditions will be held on July 15, by appointment only. There will be no open call. All contestants must be at least 13 but no older than 19 years of age on the day of the finals, Aug. 8. All applications must be accompanied by copies of proofs of age and Nassau County residency as well as photo ID. Originals of all proofs must be presented at audition. A $25 application fee will apply. Applications may be obtained at any Nassau County Park or museum, and all Nassau County libraries. Applications have also been distributed throughout the community. Vacation Bible School
The Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville, invites children to go to the edge this summer at Camp E.D.G.E. (Experience and Discover God Everywhere). Call For Craft Vendors
Mill Neck Manor is calling for vendors of handmade items for its Annual Fall Harvest Festival, held on Oct. 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A favorite tradition on LI, visitors eagerly await the festival for its crafts, apples, pumpkins, pies and other delicious treats. Country crafts, offering handmade items and holiday gifts, are one of the festival’s main features. If you make or sell crafts and feel that you would be a great addition to the Festival, you are encouraged to apply. Vendors are assigned an outdoor space (10’x10’) with a table and two chairs. All vendors are required to have a tent or canopy; those vendors who do not own a suitable tent may rent one from Mill Neck Manor for a small fee.
