Career Kick-Off
Sponsored by University College of Adelphi University, the adult undergraduate degree program, for individuals who are interested in advancing their present careers, preparing for new ones, acing the job interview and fulfilling professional goals. The free event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Ave. The event will include an opening networking event, followed by three break-out sessions with topics ranging from going back to college as an adult, to coping with the stress of the job search, among others. The keynote, “The Long Island Job Market, Growing/Shrinking Career Fields,” will be delivered by a representative from Adecco, an agency at the forefront of employment opportunities worldwide. Residents who are at least 21 years old and have a high school level education or higher are encouraged to submit an online application. Award-Winning Acting Studio for Kids/Teens
A Class Act NY’s award-winning Manhattan-based acting studio for kids and teens still has a few spaces left in its One-Week Broadway Camp (Aug. 24 through Aug. 28) at the Sid Jacobson in Roslyn. Kids work with Broadway actors all week long in one-hour workshops. When kids aren’t in a workshop, they are rehearsing for their Final Showcase in which they make Off-Broadway debut at the JCC’s own theatre. Campers are bused to and from Manhattan on Wednesday to see a Broadway matinee in which they have a talk back with actors from the show. Ages: 7 to 16 (two groups split up according to age). Freeport H.S. Class of 1959 50th Reunion
Member of the Freeport High School Class of 1959 have planned a gala weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion from Sept.11 to 13. Begins Friday night with a meeting at E.B. Elliot’s on the Nautical Mile to renew old acquaintances. Saturday will find the group at Jones Beach Field 6 or at Museum Row riding Nunley’s Carousel once more, in the bleachers at the Freeport vs. Oceanside football game or just riding around the village visiting old haunts. At 7 p.m. converge at the Freeport Yacht Club for dinner and enjoyment of music of the ‘50s. Before starting home on Sunday, groups will meet at local diners for farewells over brunch. American Sign Language Classes
Interested in learning the third most popular language studied in the United States? This fall, Mill Neck Services will offer American Sign Language classes at its new Day Habilitation and Interpreter Services building, 501 S. Broadway, Suite A, Hicksville. Within New York State, many school districts now recognize ASL as a “foreign” language, providing credit towards a Regents diploma. •Anxiety and Depression Group, a free self-help group for anxiety, panic disorder, depression, OCD and other nervous fears now meets every Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Chester Ave. and New Hyde Park Rd. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help.
