One week after opening the season with their annual parade the Farmingdale Hawks had an impressive showing. The youngest ages (5 and 6) both had bye weeks and the 9-year-olds lost to a tough Hempstead team. However, the rest of the league recorded wins during the second week of the new season.
The 10s recovered from a disappointing week 1 loss by beating East Rockaway 12-6 to kick off the weekend Saturday night under the lights at Allen Park and the 12s, coming off a hard-fought 8-0 road loss to rival Massapequa in week 1, capped off the night by beating the Bellmore Braves 38-0.
The Hawks continued their fine play at Allen Park on Sunday as the 7s, behind strong line play for the second consecutive week, defeated the Inwood Buccaneers 13-6. Nick Franco had a five-yard touchdown run and Neil Levantini ran a reverse in from the 30 to provide the scoring.
The 8s bounced back to even their record at 1-1 with a convincing 26-0 win over Franklin Square in their home opener. Running backs Greg Campisi, Joe Simons, Rich Hickis, and Jake Diaz all had good games with Greg and Joe each having long touchdown runs. Sean Sullivan and Glavens Hogarth also contributed greatly to the team’s running attack and scored their first running touchdowns in their short careers. All this running would not have been possible without the offensive line clearing the way – Luke Woodland, Nick Wendling, Kevin Wilson, Danny Hickey, Brian Emigholz, Matteo Ramos, Brandon Dols and Mike Mendel all had outstanding games which led to the win. Defensively the Hawks played smart and handled their assignments. Reis Henderson, Matt Matterese, Matt Contarino and Tyler Diblasi played behind the defensive line and contained the Franklin Square running attack all day. The defensive line penetrated into the Franklin Square backfield all game – Chris Charleston, Connor Patterson, Alex Burbano and Tommy McBrien played a major role along the defensive line shutting down Franklin Square’s offense and giving the Hawks offense plenty of opportunities to score.
In the only road game of weekend for the Hawks the 11-year-olds defeated the Baldwin Bombers 22-6. The offensive line of Michael Arpaio, Vincent Fisher, Steven Dentato, Devin Sellitti, Brandon Bustamante, Taj Penn and Max Schall set the pace early with backs Keyshawn Pettit, Dylan Fitzgerald and Matt Kleinhans picking up yardage. Devante Penn capped the Hawks’ first possession scoring from 11 yards out. Charlie Tomassetti threw to Kyle Mastrelli for the second touchdown, following a sparkling catch by Steven Kunz. On the Hawks’ third possession Myles Mills ran in from 40 yards out to provide Farmingdale with a 22-0 halftime lead.
Vincent Calderon, Sean McCormick, DaShea Edwards, Patrick Albert, Kenneth Mott, John Fullam, Nick Diaz, Albert Sippel, Tahleek Brown and Dadriene Richardson all played well defensively as the 11s moved to 2-0 for the season.
