Saturday, Sept. 12 was opening day for the Levittown Red Devils Football League. With a forecast calling for rain, and some threatening clouds, the players and cheerleaders lined up at Center Lane and Hempstead Turnpike for their march through the neighborhood to their home field on Loring Road. As always the clouds left and it turned out to be a beautiful day for the LRD parade.
The parade was lead by Levittown fire trucks, police vehicles, a marching band and local dignitaries. After the pledge to the flag, held by the VFW Color Guard, Supervisor Kate Murray flicked the switch to turn on the new field lights that were recently installed. While running across the field, all the teams of football players and cheerleaders were announced to the packed stands filled with family and friends. There was a team banner contest, and three ribbons were given out to the best ones. There was cotton candy and popcorn for the children, as well as face painting and air rides. Catering was done by the Miller Ale House, and the food was fantastic. People lined up around the field to get a plate.
After all the ceremonies were complete, the football games began. Four peanut teams played (4-5 years old) and then Midget White (8-9 years old) played their first game. All in all everyone had a great time, and was looking forward to having a fun filled season and doing this again next year.
