Walking Tour

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, 1 Bungtown Rd., Cold Spring Harbor, invites the community to a guided walking tour of its historic buildings and botanical landscape. The tour focuses on CSHL’s historic architecture and its Nobel Prize legacy and provides a peek into the cutting edge scientific research taking place. The tour will also cover the indoor and outdoor art works featured on the 117 acre shore-side campus. The tours are primarily outdoors and take place regardless of weather conditions. Areas include stairs and steep hills and are not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. Tours assemble at 10 a.m. in the Grace Auditorium lobby. Reservations are required at least seven days in advance and a minimum of 10 participants are required for each tour. There is a non-refundable tour fee of $5 per person that can be paid in advance or on arrival. Payment can only be made by cash or check and checks should be made payable to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Call 367-6895. Also on Oct. 10, 24, Nov. 7, 21.

Community Yard Sale

Held by Starflower Experiences at Manor Farm, 210 Manor Rd., Huntington. Rain date Sept. 27. People are being sought in this great way to get rid of items that are no longer needed while raising some extra cash. Not only will it help the earth by reducing how much we throw away but it will help Starflower achieve its educational mission. For a $20 donation, you can participate in the yard sale with a 10’ by 10’ portion of the field to sell your own no-longer wanted household items. Diane Emdin Sachs Memorial Walk

At Jones Beach, field 5, at 10 a.m. Proceeds raised will go towards small cell lung cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Call 367-8455.

Annual Oktoberfest

Hosted by the Locust Valley Rotary from 1 to 8 p.m. at Thomas Park, Locust Valley. Great fun for the whole family. Featuring great German food, music (Long Island’s own Spitzbuam Authentic Oktoberfest Band), dancing, beverages, kids fun (face painting, sand art, pumpkin painting, games, activities, petting zoo and rides). Dahlia Flower Show

Sagamore Hill Events

Sagamore Hill NHS will offer a host of activities beginning with a Volunteer Beach Clean-Up from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The beach clean-up is part of the International Coastal Sweep event in Oyster Bay organized by the Friends of the bay, Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary. Meet at the Visitor Center and wear appropriate shoes and old clothes. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Following the work period, refreshments and snacks will be provided behind the Visitor Center. Participating Boy andGirl Scout groups will receive Certificates of Participation. No reservations are required. There is no charge to visit Sagamore Hill NHS on Sept. 26. Visitors will still need to obtain tickets to tour the home, which they should do upon arrival at the Visitor Center. There will be a screening, a 45-minute preview DVD, which highlights segments of Ken Burns’ new documentary film: The National Parks: Americas Best Idea at 6:30 p.m. The new Burns film is set to premiere on PBS on Sept. 27.

Book Signing

John E. Hammond will be signing copies of his new book, Images of Oyster Bay, a photographic history of the village, at 2 p.m. at Borders, 425 Jericho Tpke., Syosset. The event will be hosted by the Oyster Bay Historical Society. Making Mobility a Reality

The Long Island Chapter of the Foundation Fighting Blindness presents “Making Mobility a Reality: How individuals with visual impairments can increase their access to services on Long Island,” an interactive panel discussion with representatives from the NYS Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, MTA, SCAT and the LI Council for the Blind. 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Cold Spring Harbor Library, 95 Harbor Rd., Cold Spring Harbor. Naturally Speaking Lecture Series

Planting Fields Foundation and Hoffman Center announce the 2009 Naturally Speaking Lecture Series, held at the Hoffman Center in Muttontown. This year the Hoffman Center is offering a special tour of the grounds at 6 p.m. before the lecture (and refreshments) begin at 7 p.m. $10 per lecture. Sept. 30: Nancy Friese, one of the leading landscape artists of her generation, will lecture about painting in the landscape at Planting Fields. Ms. Friese has devoted herself to working outdoors—en plein air—and exploring qualities of a particular landscape using brilliant colors and textures on large canvases. Ms. Friese’s powerful response to a specific landscape is reflected in her every brushstroke.

Soccer Tournament

Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf will host the 31st annual Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association Northern Regional Soccer Tournament on Oct. 2 and 3 at the Mitchel Athletic Complex, 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Uniondale. The Mill Neck Manor Chiefs, Western Pennsylvania Lions, Rochester Wildcats, Scranton Bears and St. Mary’s Bisons will compete in this year’s free indoor tournament. While the Mill Neck Manor Chiefs have participated for three years in the tournament, this year marks the first that Mill Neck will host. Coming in second place last year in Rochester was a highlight of the season and has motivated the team to work towards a first place win this year. The tournament schedule is as follows: 3 to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
