Jupiter String Quartet

Adelphi University welcomes back the Jupiter String Quartet for its second season as Adelphi’s Ensemble-in-Residence. The group will perform its first of three programs at 7:30 p.m. in the 500-seat acoustically state-of-the-art concert hall at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, 1 South Ave. Reserved tickets for the event will be available for $20 (regular) and $15 (senior citizens).

Flu Clinic

Resurrection and The LIFE Church will hold flu clinics open to the community to get immunized with the flu or pneumonia vaccination, delivered by a Walgreen’s pharmacist. Immunizations will be available at The LIFE, 1 Old Westbury Rd. (at Jericho Tpke., Old Westbury), from 9 a.m. to noon. Walgreen’s will handle all the paperwork for Medicare recipients. Medicare recipients will have no out-of-pocket expense. All others can submit their insurance information to Walgreen’s and each individual’s health insurer or insurance plan will respond according to coverage plan for the immunization. On the day of the clinic non-Medicare participants are asked to bring cash or check for $25 for the basic flu shot. First Battalion Parade and Oktoberfest

The Stewart Manor Fire Department is hosting the First Battalion Parade and Oktoberfest Block Party at 5 p.m. There will be numerous local fire departments marching in uniforms. It will proceed through the streets of the village ending at Village Hall on Covert Ave. There will be a DJ, music, marching bands, inflatables for the kids, cotton candy/popcorn. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 4, starting at 3 p.m.

Irish American Society

Operation Christmas Child 2009 Kicks Off

Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s purse, will host a kick-off event at The LIFE Church, 1 Old Westbury Rd., Old Westbury, at 11 a.m. The featured speaker is Livia Satterfield, a young woman who received a shoebox filled with gifts provided by the Operation Christmas Child Ministry when she was a child in Romania. Fall Fair and Homecoming

Friends Academy will hold its 70th Annual Fall Fair and Homecoming from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The community is invited to attend. Featuring a day of festivities, fun and activities for all ages. Youngsters will enjoy the many amusement rides, cotton candy, games, pony rides, arts and crafts, petting zoo, maze and more. The fair offers bargains galore in the gently-used clothing and bric-a-brac boutique called “Gideon’s Attic.” Shop for books and toys as well as selections from the ready-to-wear boutique. Fairgoers can also enjoy delicious foods including, Italian specialties, tandoori, S’mores, soups, hot pretzels, Greek salad, clams, subs, ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, smoothies, ice cream and baked goods. Athletic events take place throughout the day beginning with the Boys JV football team at 9:15 a.m. against Oyster Bay. The Boys JV Soccer team takes on Sewanhaka HS at 9:30 a.m. and at 10 a.m. the Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Field Hockey teams play Baldwin HS. At 11 a.m., the Boys Varsity Soccer team will match up against Sewanhaka HS and at 1:30 p.m. the Girls Varsity Soccer team plays Valley Stream North HS. The school is located at the intersection of Piping Rock and Duck Pond Rds., Locust Valley/Glen Cove.

Pumpkin Sale

A field of orange will cover the grounds of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Central Nassau, corner of Nassau Blvd. and Stewart Ave., Garden City, when pumpkins from the Navajo reservation in New Mexico will be delivered. The sale will continue through Halloween, Oct. 31. Homemade baked goods will also be available for purchase. Close to 3,000 pumpkins in various shapes and sizes as well as some variety pumpkins, gourds,and corn are expected. The pumpkins are priced by size rather than weight. The public is welcome to come to take pictures, wander through the Pumpkin Patch and purchase a pumpkin. The pumpkin patch will be open Oct. 3 and 4 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Oct. 5 to 8 from 4 to 7 p.m.; Oct. 9 through Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

American Heart Walk

Nassau Community College is the official Nassau County location for this year’s American Heart Walk. The walk will take place at the NCC Field House, with a health fair and registration from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and the walk itself starting at 10 a.m. The walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association, is a 5K walking event established to raise funds in the fight against heart disease and stroke on Long Island. Blood Drive

Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 420 Stewart Ave., corner of Clinton Rd., will hold a blood drive from 3:30 to 9 p.m. in the church gym. Most healthy adults can give blood every 56 days. A donor should be 16 to 75 years of age (16 year olds must have parental permission and age 76 and over need a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health on the day of donation and have no history of exposure to hepatitis or AIDS. Irish Cultural Society

Meeting at 8 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh St., across the street from the Garden City Hotel. Admission is free and open to the public. The St. Patrick’s Battalion, also called Mexico Los San Patricios, is the topic. Ian McGowan, the speaker, will use a film in his review of the history of a group of Irish soldiers who defected to the Mexican side during the Mexican-American War. He will broach the question of whether these soldiers were heroes or traitors.

Free Legal Seminar About Elder Abuse

Presented by the Nassau Community College Paralegal Studies Program and the Women’s Bar Association of Nassau County at 7 p.m. in the College Center Building. Among the topics presented in the seminar will be identification of elder abuse in its various forms: financial, physical and psychological; available actions when elder abuse is suspected; and advance directives. Family court petitions, government rules and regulations and available resources for the elderly will also be discussed. Former White House Physician to Speak

Adelphi University welcomes Robert G. Darling, White House physician during the Bill Clinton presidency and former director of the Navy Medicine Office of Homeland Security, to discuss “First Physician, An Adelphi Graduate’s Experience as White House Doctor,” at 10 a.m. in Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center, Multipurpose Room, second floor, 1 South Ave., Garden City. The lecture is part of a larger tribute event for longtime Adelphi Professor of Biology Warren B. Eickelberg. Dr. Darling tended to the medical needs of former president Bill Clinton and his vice president, their families and other government officials. He traveled to more than 40 countries to plan medical contingency operations for official presidential visits and vacations. Dr. Darling now works in the private sector and practices advanced wound care and hyperbaric medicine at the Washington County Hospital. Call 877-4555.

Story Theatre

Nassau Community College Dept. of Theatre and Dance presents the children’s theatre production of Story Theatre by Paul Sills. It is a charming production featuring playlets based on fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Garden City Public Schools Investment Bond Tours

On Oct. 27 the Garden City community will be asked to vote on the 2009 School Investment Bond, which addresses the district’s most pressing health and safety, code requirement and spatial issues. The proposed bond includes capital projects in all nine district buildings. The public is invited to join district administrators for school building tours to view some of the areas that would be addressed by the bond. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however preregistration is required. •For women newly diagnosed and/or in treatment. An evening group will meet weekly for 8 weeks on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 13.

•Dor women with metastatic breast cancer, a group will meet on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 5.
•For young women with breast cancer, a group will meet weekly for 8 weeks on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning on Oct. 13.
•A post-treatment group will meet weekly for 8 weeks on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning on Oct.13.
•Other groups for teens, couples, spouses/partners, and men with breast cancer are available upon request.

Local Chefs Support the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program

Local chefs and food purveyors are supporting the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program through fund raising and education for the month of October with special dishes, drinks, promotions and information. The Garden City Hotel, 45 Seventh St., will donate 10 percent from each “Think Pink” menu item at their Rein restaurant; items will include a Pink Ribbon Martini and select dishes by Belgian Chef Steven De Bruyn. Haunted House for Cancer Research

The 7th Annual Szuba Family Haunted House for Cancer Research will take place on Oct. 24 and 25 from 3 to 9 p.m. (just after the Fall Festival) at 92 Meadow St., Garden City. It will also be held on Oct. 25 from 3 to 9 p.m., rain or shine. The event is held each year on the weekend before Halloween and it is a wonderful way for families and kids of all ages to enjoy some Halloween fun and take part in raising money for a good cause. For a $5 admission fee you can be escorted through a haunted mansion by a ghoul or a friendly witch (student volunteers), walk through a haunted graveyard and enjoy some delicious Halloween bake sale goods. All proceeds benefit the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research and the MIRACLE Foundation (donation checks are welcomed and are tax deductable). Both charities are LI-based cancer research foundations. The Szuba family has hosted this fun event in the memory of Dr. Martin Szuba who also passed away from pancreatic cancer. Dr. Szuba’s sons, Jared (Chaminade class of ’09) and Michael (GCHS class of ’12) started the event just weeks after their dad passed away so that other children might someday not lose a parent so young to cancer. Restaurant Week

The Garden City Chamber invites the community to turn out for the second Restaurant Week in Garden City to be held Oct. 19 through Oct. 22. The week will wind up with the chamber’s 30th annual Fall Festival Street Fair to take place on Oct. 24. Ongoing Event

St. Anne’s Church Fall Coat Drive

St. Anne’s Church, 35 Dartmouth St., is currently holding its annual fall coat drive through Oct. 25. Every year, hundreds of men, women and children in Nassau County live through the cold winter season without a warm coat. There are more struggling families this year because of the current economic downturn. You can help by dropping off new or gently used clean coats, jackets or sweaters. The collection closets are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enter through the main church doors, go to the top of the stairs and the closets are on the left. Bag all donations and label as: men, women or children. Individual donations and collection efforts at your office, school or community organization are encouraged.
