Hempstead Town Supervisor and Councilman Gary Hudes instructed the town’s highway and traffic control departments to implement a number of initiatives to make it easier for students at J. Fred Sparke Elementary School in Island Trees to arrive safely.
These initiatives came as a result of information provided to Supervisor Murray and Councilman Hudes by the Sparke School PTA.
“The safety of residents, and especially children, is our top priority in Hempstead Town,” noted Supervisor Murray. “If we can assist the school by adding some safety measures, we will do everything within our power to do so.”
After being approached by PTA member Aimee Esposito and speaking to PTA President Deborah Jablonowski, the town officials looked into their concerns about the intersection of Condor Road and Lowland Lane. The officials then directed the traffic control department to upgrade the stop signs in the area to the larger, 30-inch by 30-inch signs and add bright red reflective strips to the channels of the stop signs so drivers cannot miss the traffic device. They then instructed the town’s highway department to install crosswalks and handicap ramps at the intersection, just in time for the beginning of school.
“Parents and children should be given every safety precaution available to travel safely throughout our community and on their way to school. Supervisor Murray and I were happy to accommodate the PTA at Sparke School with this request and get it completed in time for the start of the school year,” concluded Councilman Hudes.
