Kicks Off Celebration With
Business Expo on October 3
The Levittown Chamber of Commerce is kicking off its 50th anniversary with a two-week scavenger hunt beginning at their Business Expo on Oct. 3.
The Business Expo is free for chamber members and will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Levittown Veterans Memorial Park.
“It’s our way of giving back and to make sure our members have a place to show the public what they do and what they sell,” Chamber President Ann Torcivia said. “There the consumer can talk one on one with the businesses there and to promote shopping locally. We have a lot to offer and I think the public needs to know that we have what they want right here in Levittown.”
Additionally, most chamber members will be adorned in’50s style that day and there will be a passport contest, prize drawings and a DJ.
Local residents can obtain information about the scavenger hunt at the Business Expo.
“They then have two weeks to go to all the retailers and businesses to get the booklet stamped for one point. If they buy something from them while they are there they get an extra two points, they are allowed to go back to the same store and purchase every day if they want to,” Torcivia explained. “At the end of the two weeks they are to bring back their booklet to the chamber office to get counted. The person with the most points wins Levittown Loot.”
Levittown Loot can be used as currency at participating merchants and then exchanged for real money.
The Levittown Chamber of Commerce currently boasts 90 active members, including 30 new additions this year.
“I think more members are seeing that we are here to help promote their business and to get people to shop locally,” Torcivia said.
While Torcivia said she first became involved in the Chamber for business exposure, influencing people to shop locally is her ultimate goal. Since becoming president earlier this year, she has created a program where veterans get discounts from chamber members.
“I think if I had not joined I would not have done as much business in Levittown as I do,” she added.
Louise Cassano established LuCas Communications in April 1994 and said she joined the Chamber later that year because of articles she had seen in the Tribune.
“Phyllis Capriola was president at that time and the chamber seemed to be doing a lot to bring the business community together,” she added. “Whether you’re starting up a business or well established, it’s important to continuously build relationships with people in the community and the chamber is one of the ways that allows me to do that. Being with local business people reminds me of how important it is for me and all Levittown residents to transact business in our own community where our businesses pay taxes and economically support the Levittown economy.”
According to its website, the Chamber is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of businesses and business opportunities in the Levittown community. Cooperative efforts involving businesses, organizations, institutions, government and residents are encouraged to preserve the quality, character and vitality of Levittown.
The Chamber offers a variety of services to its membership, including:
• Regular monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of the month throughout the year, except in July, featuring professional speakers and offering excellent networking opportunities;
• A monthly Spotlight on Business column in the local community newspapers;
• Regular advertising on behalf of Levittown businesses;
• A quarterly newsletter is sent to all members to announce upcoming events, new members, member news and other chamber business;
• An annual Business to Community Expo offering exhibition opportunities to chamber members;
• An annual Networking Party;
• A relationship with the Levittown Business Corridor Association, Inc. a corporation dedicated to enhancing the appearance of Hempstead Turnpike where it traverses the Levittown community;
• Membership in the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce and the Levittown Community Council;
• A working relationship with the various community organizations including Levittown Property Owners Association, Levittown Fire Department, Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Levittown Historical Society, Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council, local school boards, veterans organizations, civic organizations and houses of worship.
