CSH Laboratory Cultural Series

Senthil Muthuswamy, Ph.D., is a cell biologist and cancer researcher at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In his lecture, he will explain a new framework that he has developed for thinking about cancer biology. Muthuswamy’s insight follows from the observation that one of the first signs of cancer is often a change in the shape and internal architecture of affected cells. But very little is known about the genes, proteins and cellular pathways that regulate cell shape and spatial orientation. This is one factor that makes it difficult to devise therapies to halt the process by which an early, pre-cancerous lesion transforms itself into a deadly malignant tumor. Muthuswamy will explain the“3D” system he and his lab have developed which gives a new picture of how the shape and orientation of cells are implicated in cancer. He will also discuss how his team has used archives of gene data on cancerous tissue to identify new drug targets in patients with tumors that do not respond to chemotherapy. 7 p.m. at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, 1 Bungtown Rd., Cold Spring Harbor. Call 367-8455.
