Over 60…And Getting Younger: October 30, 2009

75!

Stan, you are 75 years old!

You have lived through five wars, served in the United States Army, have three children and six grandchildren. I would have to say you are a lucky guy!

It hasn’t been a bed of roses and you have lost a lot of family and good friends along the way, but you are still vertical and moving around. Your tennis game leaves a lot to be desired but occasionally you get the ball back over the net.

You are still married to the same, beautiful woman after 47 years and it looks like you found a keeper. Lorraine is her name and you found her in the suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland.

You lived through those horrible lean years with your beloved Brooklyn Dodgers losing almost every year to those Damn-Yankees. Thank God for Johnny Podres and the 1955 season. Also you were lucky enough to be at the two greatest games in basketball and football. In 1959, you were in the Yankee Stadium bleachers when Alan Ameche plunged through the line and beat the NY football Giants. You were also in the last row of Madison Square Garden when Willis Reed came out and scored the first two baskets when the NY Knickerbockers beat the Los Angeles Lakers.

I am still involved in dentistry, as I am an attending dentist at Jamaica Hospital. Working with newly graduated dentists is a labor of love. Helping young people helps keep one young.

Lorraine and I have taken many trips to six continents and someday maybe we will travel to Antarctica. In 1959, I spent a year in Korea with the United States Army. I remember working in the dining rooms of many Catskill hotels. I was a better busboy than I was a waiter. Who can remember all those chicken orders?

This column is some sort of an inventory of my life. I play tennis and I am associated with many 80-year-olds. I hope to go forth into the future with good health and a reasonable sanity. I hope my readers have not been too bored with my excursion through my life.
