Villagewide Election — Congratulations
Congratulations to Trustees Donald T. Brudie, John J. Watras, Nicholas P. Episcopia and Brian C. Daughney on their election last Tuesday. It is gratifying to note that the affairs of our village are in such capable hands. I look forward to continuing working with the board of trustees, and also working with Brian C. Daughney. I believe we can achieve a great deal over the next year.
I also want to express gratitude to all of the many residents who made the time to vote in the annual village election and encourage you to become familiar with your property owners’ associations and to become involved with it. I know trustee decisions will never be supported by 100 percent of the residents 100 percent of the time, but I believe Tuesday’s vote substantiates that residents are confident they want to see the Community Agreement form of governing continue.
The four Property Owners’ Associations are organized according to geographic locations within the village and are the root of Garden City’s Community Agreement form of government. The Community Agreement was designed to provide equal representation within village government and school district boards to each of the sections that the Community Agreement created. Participation in the property owners’ associations is the best way residents can learn about village affairs, contribute their point of view and volunteer their services to the community. Through the years, the Property Owners’ Associations have been the entities that have cultivated Garden City’s long line of talented and dedicated elected officials. Spring Cleanup
All residents are asked to assist in the task of cleaning up our community to make it look like a beautiful “Garden City.” We can do that by picking up paper, cans, bottles and other debris, which may have been deposited on the streets and other public areas near their homes. A few minutes of cooperative effort by all of us can make our village look 100 percent better.
Residents are also reminded that rubbish should not be placed on the curb before the evening prior to the collection day. It is a detraction from the aesthetics of the village and poor treatment of one’s neighbors to ignore the village law, which specifies that rubbish should not be deposited at curbside before the evening prior to collection.
Pet owners are asked to please be considerate of those who are working to keep our community beautiful and those who are using park areas by cleaning up after your dog and by disposing of the waste at curbside on Wednesdays.
The Police Department is issuing summonses for these violations, which are answerable in the Village Justice Court and can result in a fine for each offense.
Congratulations to the Garden City High School Girls Track and Field Team
I would like to offer congratulations on behalf of the board of trustees to the Garden City Girls’ Track and Field Team for being named “National Champs.” The 4 X 400 Sprint Medley Relay Team of Taryn Schmelzinger, Catherine Cafaro, Michelle Rotondo and Emily Menges placed first in 4 minutes 2.7 seconds. This time was also the fastest time in the United States this season. Special thanks also to Head Coach Erica Frogosi and her Assistant Coaches Tom Skrivanek and George Lucas for guiding them to a successful, winning season.
Our Business Districts — Please Shop and Do Business in Garden City
With the arrival of spring, it is great to see increased pedestrian activity along Seventh Street and New Hyde Park Road. It brings into focus just how great a place our business community is and raises expectations over how great our village will be this summer with the spring plantings and the beginning of our outdoor dining, which will begin on April 1.
Please show your support for our merchants and continue to shop in Garden City. Let the business owners know how they can better serve your needs. You will be pleasantly surprised with how quickly they will accommodate.
Board of Trustees Meetings
The next board of trustees meeting will be the annual organizational meeting, on April 5. The meeting will be held in the boardroom at Village Hall.
