A group of New Hyde Park Memorial High School softball players and students have been, without any fanfare, devoting their time each Friday after practice to help Special Olympic athletes play baseball and softball.
Their love and enthusiasm for their sport is nothing compared to the joy they experience by sharing their skills with these special children. In an age group that I have come to call “the pedestal generation” where accolades and awards are given out before they have accomplished anything for the good of their fellow man it was more than heartwarming to watch these young people reach out to help and support such a worthy cause.
To that end, last Saturday, there was a Special Olympics basketball tournament and to help them with this endeavor many Memorial athletes were on hand.
Personally, I know my daughter would like to play fast pitch softball in the college ranks but I am so proud that rather than being the center of attention she has centered her attention on what is good and right for the community and not just herself.
