Sam Quinn Knows Oyster Bay
Sam Quinn emailed this answer to the Enterprise Pilot mystery picture of April 29. He wrote, “Hello, although I live in the Atlanta area now, I read your paper every week to keep in touch with ‘back home’. The April 30 Mystery Picture [the Internet date is Friday’s date] is St. Dominic’s HS which I attended in the early 70’s.” It is always very special to hear from the ex-pats.
Nicholas Gismondi, who made last week’s front page for his great academic achievements – he is a SUNY Plattsburgh Presidential Scholar. He said the mystery picture is, “Looking down at St. Dominic’s near the parish office and the basketball courts on Anstice Street.
Billy Minicozzi, guessed it was another brick building in Oyster Bay. On a sports note, he wished good luck to Super Saver for winning the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1, the first in the Triple Crown.
Gregory Adami nailed the site saying, “It is at St. Dominic High School; heading north on Anstice Street. It is the second building on the left, after the high school. It used to be the convent, where Mother Mary’s Memorial is out in front.”
[We must say, we mistakenly thought the convent was the building to the north of the St. Dominic parking lot. The house with the Mansard roof.]
But, Rosemary Mavros of Oyster Bay also said it was the old St. Dominic convent, where the nuns lived.
And…
John DeJesu now from Bayville identified the photograph from the April 22 Enterprise Pilot. “It’s by the Oyster Bay WaterFront Center, on West End Avenue, in the area between Larrabee Avenue and Beekman Beach. I used to be a lifeguard there after high school.”
It’s great fun talking about Oyster Bay. There is always something special to learn about.
