North Shore Symphony Orchestra

Present a concert at 8 p.m. The concert, entitled Horizons Concert, will feature violin soloist Anton Polezhayev who is NSSO’s Artist-in-Residence. Mr. Polezhayev will perform Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, which is a brilliant orchestral showcase for the violin soloist and full orchestra. NSSO will also perform Strauss’ Fledermaus Overture, Turina’s La Procession del Rocio and Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture. Conducted by NSSO’s Music Director and Conductor Susan Deaver, the concert will be held at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, 50 Kennedy Dr. Tickets are $10 general; $8 seniors/students and will be on sale beginning one hour prior to the performance. Call 695-4476.

Summer Celebrations

The North Shore Symphony Orchestra will present the fourth concert of its 48th Season at 8 p.m. The concert entitled “Summer Celebrations” will feature the winner of NSSO’s Young Artist Award Competition – cellist Lukas Bentel, who will perform Lalo’s Cello Concerto. A resident of Locust Valley, Lukas Bentel is currently studying at The Manhattan School of Music Precollege. A tribute will be made to Dr. Charles Gouse, founder of the NSSO who died in early March 2009. NSSO will perform Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, Saint-Saens’ Danse Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah, Chadwick Jubilee from Symphonic Sketches and Debussy March ecossaise. Conducted by NSSO’s Music Director and Conductor Susan Deaver, the concert will be held at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Model A Ford Show

Old Bethpage Village, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, will host the 38th Annual Model “A” Ford Day from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event, showcasing more than 60 historic Model A’s, will take place on the Village Fairgrounds, which is a re-creation of the old Mineola Fairgrounds. In the event that rain forces a cancellation, the event will take place on June 27.) In addition to the vintage automobile display, the sounds of a late-l9th-century brass band will be re-created by the Old Bethpage Village Brass Band, performing at 2 and 3:15 p.m. Call 572-8400.

Independent Art Society

Presents a free dual-artist colored pencil demonstration. Join artist-teacher Arlene Steinberg and artist Caryn Coville as they share a variety of creative art techniques with this wonder media. Cutting-Edge Cancer Research

Hear about the latest research in breast, kidney colon, pancreatic and skin cancers, pediatric brain tumors and lymphoma. Doctors from area hospitals such as Stony Brook University Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center will receive grants and discuss their research. 7:30 p.m. at the Plainview Old-Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old Country Rd., Plainview. Fred K’s Cancer Event

The Traveling Baseball Babes, with the assistance of the Oral Cancer Foundation and Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation, will participate in the first annual Fred K’s Cancer event, walking the 2 miles of the Cantiague Park’s Fitness Trail alongside the event’s honorees and namesakes, Fred Ahne and Fred Leone, friends, family members, and supporters. Donations will be split between the Oral Cancer Foundation and Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation. 9 to 11 a.m. at Cantiague Park, W. John St., east of Cantiague Rock Rd., Hicksville. Galactic Blast Vacation Bible School

Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville, invites all children to Galactic Blast: A Cosmic Adventure Praising God Vacation Bible School. Board the spaceship Galactic Praise to see the awesome universe (and God) in a whole new way. The fun begins July 26 and ends July 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Each Galactic Mission begins with a Bible Story in the Good New Galaxy, along with science activities at the Orbital Observatory, music at Moon & Tune, art projects at Cosmic Crafts, games at Rocket Rev and a snack at the Astro Bistro. •Family Support Group, an ongoing support group for those who have family members or other loved ones with mental illness. Meets on Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services, 950 South Oyster Bay Rd. The fee is $5 per family. •Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Chorus welcomes new members. Meetings are held Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. in the choral room of POB Middle School. All voices are needed and no experience is necessary. Rehearsals run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. For information call 931-4377 or 935-6243.

•Senior Citizen Lunch Program. Nassau County provides a lunch program for seniors 60+, who live in Nassau County. The donation is $3. The lunch is held at the Jamaica Avenue School, 85 Jamaica Ave. Reservations must be called in by Wednesday at 937-6424.

•POB Senior Citizen Club meeting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays in the All-Purpose Room at the Jamaica Avenue School, 85 Jamaica Ave. For information call 937-6424. The club offers trips, cruises, parties, social and line dancing, art courses for all levels, craft classes, card games, bingo, horseracing, yoga, education programs, etc. Members must be 60 years or older, residing in the POB S.D. are eligible. Bring school tax bill as proof of residency. Dues is $15. New members welcome.

•Meet the Doctors. Focusing on education, Premiere OBGYN will sponsor a Meet the Doctors program on the first Tuesday of each month from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at 79 Froelich Farm Blvd., Woodbury. Women who are planning a pregnancy or are already expecting can join Drs. Prince, Brooks and Flynn and have their questions answered on conception and a safe pregnancy.

•Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) was founded in 1978, is congressionally chartered and exclusively dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and their families. •Golf for Singles Adults, a group of 50 + single seniors meet the third Tuesday of every month, at 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, Sunnyside Blvd., Exit 46 off the LIE, Plainview. For info call 942-4228. The group plays on courses, mostly in Suffolk on the weekends as well as during the week.

•Italian Culture Society at Farmingdale meets the last Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at Ellsworth W. Allen Park, Motor Ave. Italian lessons are given by a native Italian teacher. •Central Oyster Bay Democratic Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the community room at the Nutty Irishman, 323 Main St., in the Village of Farmingdale. All are welcome to attend. The club serves the communities of Farmingdale, North Massapequa, Plainedge, Bethpage, Old Bethpage, Plainview and Farmingdale State University. •Introduction to Chemotherapy, a monthly information session for cancer patients who are beginning chemotherapy treatments. Family members are welcome. Refreshments served. Nurses with special training, dietitians and other professionals present information that can help individuals understand, and cope with, the effects of chemotherapy treatments. There is also an opportunity to share information with others who may have been through similar situations. Meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Patient’s Lounge on 3-West at North Shore University Hospital at Plainview, 888 Old Country Rd. •Cancer Survivors Support Group offered for survivors and their families at North Shore Hospital at Plainview, 888 Old Country Rd. The group is free and meets on the second Thursday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes all cancers. Call Barbara for further information 541-4673.

•Green Living Seminars, a series hosted by Starflower Experiences at 7 p.m. at the Melville Branch of the Half Hollow Hills Library, 510 Sweet Hollow Rd., directly across from the Sunquam Elementary School (between Route 110 and Old Country Rd.).
