Gabby Sant Angelo Knows Oyster Bay
Gabby Sant Angelo called to identify the June 10 mystery picture in the Enterprise Pilot. “It’s Dodds & Eder. I know because I work there. I love it,” she added.
Marg Buffa of Bayville, formerly of Oyster Bay’s Park Avenue, called to say the mystery picture was of Dodds & Eder. She said, “It’s the entrance you walk though and I’ve been in that little gazebo on the left-hand side. I’m at Dodds & Eder all the time, I’m a gardener. I have one garden in our yard in Bayville with lots of veggies and flowers; and two at my mother-in-law’s house in Glen Cove. I took over from my father-in-law. I love to garden and grow vegetables because I love to give them to everyone, so I am at Dodds & Eder a lot.”
We agreed that tomatoes never taste the same as when they are fresh from a home garden. She said, “I have two friends who like to make tomato sandwiches and I grow them specially for them. They are big, one is called Supersonic and the other I think Park’s Whopper. They are specifically for tomato sandwiches. It’s a lot of fun. There’s nothing like being out in the yard and planting the veggies and seeing them growing.
“To keep down the weeds I go to Lowe’s or Home Depot to get black tarp for painters. I put pegs down, and cut the plastic to size. It’s the best for all gardens. When you plant, you make an X of about 2 inches by 2 inches and put in the plant. The water goes into the flap and there are no weeds in the garden.
“In this hustle-bustle life we don’t have time for weeding. My father-in-law used his grass clippings to keep down weeds. I learned a lot from him. I roto-till every year. I buy topsoil and mulch every year so the soil is replenished. Hence my knowing about Dodds & Eder.”
In other news, she said her son Travis Buffa, a Naval Academy graduate four years ago, is now a lieutenant, as of June 1.
Belle Santora, too, called to say, “I was right last week and I know what it is this week. It’s going into Dodds & Eder on the corner of Weeks Avenue and South Street.”
Happy Birthday to Belle Santora on June 20! She is going to be 99.
John DeJesu said of the June 3 photograph, “It is looking south on South Street at the Oyster Bay Boat Yard.”
His granddaugher Kendal Morfis of Bayville identified the June 10 photo as the entrance to Dodds & Eder, related her mom, Jayne Morfis.
Longtime Oyster Bay resident Arthur Leuteman, who now lives in Syosset, called to identify the photograph. “It’s Dodds & Eder on the corner of Weeks and South Street. Across the street is the old telephone company building.”
Tom Power called the “Enterprising Pilot” for his sister Maureen Power who said, “It’s Dodds & Eder as you go into it from the parking lot.”
Another caller, Valerie Basso too said, “It’s going into Dodds & Eder.”
An email from Rich Reynolds of Niskayuna, NYS said, “I recognize this week’s mystery picture as the entrance to Dodds & Eder.” He added, “Keep those Mystery Pictures coming!”
Rosemary Marvos said, “It’s Dodds & Eder. This beautiful establishment is an asset to Oyster Bay. My son from Locust Valley and I both agree!”
