Run Benefits Women’s Groups Long Island Oceans, The Opening Word
Leo Petrina made crossing the finish line in 16:40 look easy, scoring a victory over defending champion Katie DiCamillo by a 41-second margin. Petrina won the Long Island Women’s 5K Run on July 17, held at Farmingdale High School and hosted by Arrow Exterminating. Petrina also won the Paula Wunderlich Memorial Award for being the first member of the Greater Long Island Running Club to finish the race.
Despite the heat and high humidity, 348 women of all ages and abilities completed in the event, including several dozen that participated in the quarter mile fun run preceding the event.
Among the top finishers, Christina DeRosa took third place, Heather Williams scored fourth, and Jessica Petermann rounded out the top five. Una Broderick took sixth overall, placing first in the masters level finishers.
The event supports the fight against gynecological cancers, with a substantial portion of the proceeds going to Long Island Oceans, bringing light to all gynecological cancers. Proceeds also support The Opening Word, an education program sponsored by the Dominican Sisters aimed at giving poor, uneducated women the tools they need to become productive members of society.
Farmingdale resident Joan Ackerman took second place in the 70-74 age category with a time of 37:21. Other Farmingdale residents completing the run include Cristina Diaz (26:56), Tara Gangarossa (27:19), Danielle Geddes (27:31), Lori Ann Pizzanelli (28:17), Margaret Velez (28:54), Christine Morra (29:47), Clara Sheehan (30:42), Amy Goldstein (30:56), Denise Marcel (31:19), Eileen Zodda (32:27), Michelle Ackerman (35:29), Maryann Harvey (35:41), Ellen Shapiro (36:31), Marguerite Macagnone (36:51), Michelle Vega (38:23), Lori Ciniglio (38:41), Colleen Giordano (41:36), Karin Dentato (42:46), Susan Cavallo (43:59), Cindy Miller (44:48), Mary Bergersen (50:27), Ann Marie Kaufman (50:27), and Nicole Goldfarb (52:17).
Arrow Exterminating returned as the event’s title sponsor in coordination with GLIRC, Jackie Grabin, and Debby Tappan. Many others helped make the event possible including Bob Cook and his great staff at The Runner’s Edge, the Glen Cove family law firm of Mejias, Milgrim & Alvarado, P.C., New York Sports Clubs, Banfi and Harbor Lights.
