Feast of the Assumption

The Maria SS. Dell’Assunta Society presents the 100th Annual Feast of the Assumption. Featuring Italian food and entertainment, rides, games, fireworks on Saturday evening and more. Free Solar Energy Seminar

The Town of Hempstead will host a free Solar Energy Seminar for Long Island homeowners interested in learning how to make the switch to solar electricity and other ways to make their homes more energy efficient. A representative from Bellmore-based Built Well Solar Corp. will explain solar energy’s true payback to the pocketbook and the planet. Join other residents who are doing their part to create a greener, cleaner Long Island by taking advantage of available LIPA cash rebates and tax credits for solar power. Q & A to follow. 100 Years of Broadway

Eisenhower Park’s Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre (located near parking fields 6 and 6A, East Meadow ) becomes center stage for a nostalgia-filled musical revue featuring some of the greatest Broadway show-stoppers of the past century. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free. With a cast of Broadway actors and actresses, producer Neil Berg’s “100 Years of Broadway” includes standards by composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Frank Loesser. Among the shows that are incorporated into the evening’s entertainment are The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and Jersey Boys. Call 572-0200.

Youth Empowerment Day

A free, fun-filled event that was created to teach as well as celebrate every young person in a non-threatening, relaxed setting. The program consists of a panel of professionals, performances by various artists, free food, games give-aways and music. All youth centered organizations are invited. Panel themes include: how to: resist peer pressure, say no to gangs, avoid becoming a teenage mother or father, say no to alcohol, take bacvk your community by working toward a cleaner and safer neighborhood and more. The day also honors Dr. Laguerre for his contribution in caring for hundreds of sick children and their families. The guest speaker is young entrepreneur, Leanna Archer, who started her own corporation at the age of 11. Outdoor Movies

Movies will be shown on the giant screen at the Lakeside Theatre in Eisenhower Park (located near parking fields 6 and 6A), East Meadow. Special accommodations are available for disabled patrons, including reserved parking, easily accessible restrooms, and a convenient reserved location on the hill. Assistive hearing devices are available for the hearing impaired. There is no formal seating at Lakeside Theatre, so moviegoers are urged to bring folding chairs. The movies will begin at dusk. Free Informational Lectures. Chiropractors Dr. Laraine Valenti and Dr. Michael Bernstein will hold free informational lectures in their office, 3000 Hempstead Tpke., Suite 304. They have found that many people appreciate the opportunity to get their health related questions answered by caring doctors. •Pet Loss Support Group. People who feel very sad about the loss or serious illness of their cat or dog can now come to a bi-weekly support group led by an experienced counselor in the conference room at Bide-A-Wee, 3300 Beltagh Ave., Wantagh. These sessions are open to the public; they are not restricted to Bide-A-Wee clients or adopters. The group facilitator is Medea Berkman, a pet loss group leader with many years of experience. She gently guides the healing process to help people come to terms with their feelings of sadness and loss. No fee, but all donations are gratefully accepted to help Bide-A-Wee provide for the animals in our care until we place them in loving homes. Anyone who has experienced a loved one suffering from addiction knows all too well that it affects more people than just the addicted; everyone close to a person addicted to drugs or alcohol feels the effects. Residents of Nassau County who are dealing with or affected by drug or alcohol addiction are urged to urged to call the NC Dept. of Drug and Alcohol Addiction’s free, anonymous 24/7 hotline, run by Long Island Crisis Center, at 481-4000.

The Art Club

Levittown’s Brass and Percussion

Help keep kids off drugs and out of trouble. Start them young in Levittown’s Brass and Percussion. A nonprofit organization that will teach kids, ages 8 to 88, to play an instrument and have fun parading, performing, competing and many social events. All free of charge. Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services

Located at 950 South Oyster Bay Rd., Hicksville. The following programs are offered:

•The Community Program has a group for senior citizens. The Golden Years? The group is open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted. For information about this or any other services call 822-4060.

•A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. The fee is $5 per family. Therapeutic and supportive services to people hampered in their functioning by mental illness, psychological difficulties and/or substance abuse and addiction problems is provided. Among its services, the agency provides outpatient mental health services for children and adults living in Nassau County. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.

•An outpatient substance abuse agency offering a Parenting Group on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. This group specializes in parenting issues for substance abusers as well as parents whose children use drugs. While drug use among teens has declined in other parts of the country, it continues to rise here in Nassau County. For information on this group as well as other services, call 822-4060. All inquiries are confidential.

•Women’s Domestic Issues group provides support and education to women experiencing domestic conflict, child abuse, substance abuse and related issues. The focus will be on education, support as well as empowerment and proactive behavior. Issues related to the family and the legal system will be addressed. The group will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Preregistration required. Call 822-4060.

•Young Adult Drug Addiction Group for people 18 to 21 who are recovering from drug addiction. The goals are to enhance skills, increase self-awareness and work toward a drug and alcohol free life. The group meets Thursdays at 8 p.m. Call 822-4060. All inquiries are confidential.

•Volunteers are needed by Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services to help staff the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The volunteers help raise much needed funds for the agency so that mental health and substance abuse programs can continue to be provided to the residents of Hicksville and the surrounding communities. HUMC Food Pantry Open

Hunger is a real issue facing our local area. In response to this need, the Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 Old Country Rd., opened a food pantry. The pantry is open on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Non-perishable foods, paper goods and hygiene items are given to our neighbors in need. Contact us if you can help in any way. Help for Seniors

Are you a senior who would like help paying for your Medicare benefits and prescription drugs? Free assistance is only a phone call away if you qualify for extra help because of limited income. There may be a way to alleviate some of the cost of Medicare – deductibles and coinsurance, Part B premiums, prescription drug plans (Part D). Reducing monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments, aiding with coverage gaps (the doughnut hole). Hope for Youth

Hope for Youth is a not-for-profit agency located in Amityville and serving LI families and youth since 1969. Infertility Supports Groups

•Introduction to Jewish Prayer on Mondays at 8:15 p.m. Text: To Pray as a Jew by Rabbi Haim Donnin. Instructor Rabbi Alan Lavin. The course is designed for those who would like to learn the history, meaning and structure of the siddur.

Job Referral Service

Attention managers, store owners, private businesses: YES Community Center has a job referral service that helps businesses fill their job vacancies with pre-screened, motivate young people. The employment program consists of approximately 150 youth every year in their efforts to secure employment within the community. All participants go through an initial screening process to determine their employability and job readiness. They are offered information and assistance with any job-related issue such as job search skills, interview preparation and resume writing, career guidance and planning. YES provides a listing of current job openings within the area and helps match the needs of the employer with those of the young people. Exhibit of Early Levittown Memorabilia

In celebration of 50 years of Levittown, the Levittown Historical Society presents the exhibit “Levittown, the American Dream 1947-1957.” Filled with early Levittown memorabilia, it is a “walk down Memory Lane.” Includes: WWII Levitt House, appliances, photographs, furniture, wedding gifts, toys and memories. Midshore Mother’s Center

Is a non-profit organization run by moms for moms. A safe, non- judgmental place for mothers to share ideas, exchange information and make new friends. Discussion groups, mommy and me classes, separation classes, craft classes, family activities and mom’s night out are offered. Senior Center

Catholic Charities Seaford Community Service Center, located in St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2197 Jackson Ave., Seaford, welcomes persons age 60 and over to its multi-purpose senior center. Delicious hot meals are served daily and transportation is provided in the towns of Wantagh Seaford, Massapequa and Massapequa Park. Senior Citizen Club

Sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, Dept. of Senior Enrichment. Since the club meets at Memorial High School, Abbey Ln., it runs on a school schedule from September to June on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The members enjoy coming in to socialize, play cards, games, Bingo and get instruction on different arts and crafts projects. Senior Puppet Theater

Pretty New Thrift Shop

Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville.
