Last Week for Amusement Park Tickets

Children’s Tennis Lessons
The Recreation Department will offer tennis lessons to children ages 4 to 18 at the Community Park Tennis Center. The lesson program will start in late September and run through December.
Registration will begin Sept. 10, by mail only. All dates and prices will be listed in an upcoming article or on the website on Sept. 10. Here is a description of the classes offered and the days/times of each level:
Tots Tennis (ages 4 to 5)
Tuesday or Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Pee Wee Tennis (ages 5 to 7 years)
The major goal of this program is to introduce young children into the ‘fun and rewarding world’ of tennis. The equipment and size of the playing area are tailored down to a comfortable size for young children. Emphasis is placed on learning basic movement and striking skills. Rackets are provided at this level only. This program is offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday at 3:30 or 4:30 p.m.; Friday at 3:30 p.m.; and Saturday at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 or 1:30 p.m.
Novice Tennis Program (ages 6 and 7 years)
The novice level program is designed for children who have taken two or more sessions of Pee Wee Tennis Lessons, and who have mastered the basic movement and striking skills. The children will be introduced to a full size tennis court, but emphasis continues to be on the ‘fun world’ of tennis, while reinforcing the basic movement and striking skills. Serving and scorekeeping will also be introduced. The program is offered Monday or Wednesday at 4:30 or 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday or Friday at 3:30 p.m.; Thursday at 3:30, 4:30 or 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday at 12:30 or 1:30 p.m.
Junior Tennis Program (ages 8 to 11 years)
The junior program is an extension of the Novice Level Program. Emphasis continues to be on efficient movement and striking concepts, and skills related to tennis play. The concept of trying hard, having fun, and improving remains at the heart of the lessons. An introduction to the benefits of competitive fair play and respect for opponents is provided. The program is offered Monday at 3:30 or 4:30 p.m., Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday or Thursday at 3:30, 4:30 or 5:30 p.m.; Friday at 3:30 p.m.; and Saturday at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.
Advanced Junior Classes (ages 8 to 11 years)
The advanced level classes are for the more serious more advanced student who has mastered the elements of the Junior Level program. Classes are held on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Senior Tennis Program (ages 12 and older)
The senior programs are focused on the fundamentals of recreational and competitive play, including tennis fitness, stroke mechanics; positional play movement, and strategies. All strokes are introduced and/or reviewed in the first several sessions, with drills and integration of strokes and strategies built into subsequent lessons. The program is offered Tuesday or Thursday at 5:30 p.m.; Friday at 4:40 p.m.; and Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Senior Advanced Tennis
(ages 12 and older)
The advanced level classes are for the more serious more advanced student who is of the appropriate age and has mastered the skills offered in the Junior or Senior Level programs. Offered – Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
Ultimate Workout for Juniors
(ages 9 to 11) or
Seniors (ages 12 and up)
For youngsters who want to hone their skills and get a good workout, be ready for intense and demanding drill sessions.
Roller Hockey Registration
The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce the start of registration for Fall Roller Hockey. Whether you played last season or haven’t played in a couple of years, now is the perfect time to sign up and experience all the fun. Our Sunday sessions will begin on Sept. 12 and Friday sessions will begin on Sept.17. All programs take place at Community Park’s Roller Rink.
In-person registration began at the Administrative Office at 108 Rockaway Ave., on Friday, Aug. 27. Applications may be picked up at the Recreation Office or downloaded off the Recreation’s website at www/gardencityrecreation.org. All checks should be made payable to “Inc. Village of Garden City.”
A reminder: Each participant is required to wear full equipment at all times. This includes hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, roller blades, hockey stick, long pants, and a protective cup.
A description of each program offered is as follows:
Learn & Play Program Roller Hockey Clinic
This eight-week program has been designed to introduce the exciting game of Roller Hockey for children ages 5-7. No experience is required in hockey or roller-skating as this is a Beginners Program. This hour-long clinic will take place on Sunday afternoons at 12:45 and 2 p.m.
Recreation Department Leagues
Our Roller Hockey Leagues are broken into age groups. Please pay careful attention as our age groupings and dates/times have changed.
Mites Division is for 6- and 7-year-olds who have basic skating skills. Since this division is games only, if your child is new to the sports, you should register them for the learn and play clinic. Games will take place on Sunday afternoons with either a 3:15 or 4:30 p.m. start, depending on your child’s team schedule.
Junior Division – ages 8 through 10 will play on Friday afternoons with either a 4 or 5:30 p.m. start depending on your child’s team schedule.
Senior Division – ages 11 through 13 will play on Friday evenings at either 6:45 or 8 p.m. depending on your child’s team schedule.
High School Open Hockey: for ages 14 to 16. Games will be played on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. in a “pick-up” format.
Adult Division for ages 30 and over – games will take place on Sunday evenings at 7:15 p.m. with an occasional “Friday night under the Lights.” Games are in “pick-up” format.
