On Oct. 23, a Saturday filled with warm sunshine and light breezes – a day just meant for parades and celebrations, Homecoming 2010 kicked off in downtown Garden City. Below the fluttering gold leaves, the sidewalks bustled with activity as local businesses shared their wares and services with visitors to the annual Street Fair. Crowds lined the parade route as the Homecoming Parade moved west on Seventh Street, a rainbow of colors against the blue autumnal sky: Garden City High School’s familiar maroon and silver worn by Grand Marshal Jake White in the lead vehicle; myriad colorful banners and flags carried by high school groups and service clubs; the crisp black and maroon of the marching band; the royal blue of the Cub Scouts Pack 55; the fire engine red of, well, the Garden City fire engines; and, capturing the oohs and ahhs of aspiring young equestrians along the route, the tan and cream of the parade’s anchor horse and rider.
Not long after the parade wound its way to the high school’s Warren King Field, the Homecoming football game kicked off against the Wantagh Warriors. Equally matched before the game, each with a 5-1 record, the Trojans dominated all but the final quarter of the game, finishing with a win of 31-14.
Halftime entertainment was provided by the marching band and color guard, kick line, and cheerleaders, and did not disappoint. Also presented during halftime was the Homecoming Court with the crowning of King William Chow and Queen Christine Codignotto.
