Sagamore Yacht Club Junior Fishing Derby

The fall Junior Fishing Derby, organized and run by Karl Brosky, was held on Saturday, Sept. 11. The weather was perfect and about 20 children ranging in age from 2 to 15 years old, all wearing the required life vests, assembled on the Sagamore dock for some serious fishing. There were at least 20 adults helping to bait the hooks and to “un-hook” the fish in order to throw them back in the water.

Most of the fish caught were porgies. There were a few snappers, a dogfish and the catch of the day, a 15 inch fluke.

Trophies, red, white, and blue columns, topped appropriately by a fish, were presented to the three who caught the most fish:

1st prize to Ryan Jarvis – 21 fish

2nd prize to John Jarvis – 20 fish

3rd prize to Sophia Polizzi – 14 fish

Honorable Mention went to Dylan Kaber who caught the 15 inch fluke and to Edward Mamone who caught the dog fish. All the participants received blue ribbons.

Mini Carnival

Following the fishing derby, there was a mini carnival for Sagamore Yacht Club children and friends which was organized by Deanna Flanagan. This took place on the club house patio.

There were about 50 children who attended. accompanied by parents and grandparents. They participated in sack races, shell painting, bean bag toss, spin art, spin-a-wheel, and other activities. A big attraction was the Bounce-Around on the SYC lawn. The pop corn machine was working continuously and each child received a box of pop corn. Hot dogs, drinks and ice cream were also served.

Music provided a festive carnival atmosphere.
