Veteran Farmingdale runner Stacey Vesling turned in a strong performance in this year’s Great Prostate Cancer 5 Kilometer Run on Sunday, Nov. 14, finishing in 29:00 to earn the first place award in the ‘Athena 160 pounds and above’ weight division.
The venue for the race was a bit different than the standard road race, with 3.1 miles entirely on the pathways of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Golf Course in Woodbury, and the not-so-gentle (but short) hills. The course provided an interesting challenge that the 382 finishers seemed to thoroughly enjoy once again. The race registrations were up 30 percent for this race, from the previous year.
The Great Prostate Challenge 5 Kilometer Run is one of a series of such runs held all over the country to promote “zero tolerance for prostate cancer.” The local organizing group is Integrated Medical Foundation, which offers free cancer awareness/educational programs/support services and free cancer screenings to the New York community.
As IMF Executive Director Rhonda Samuel expressed it, “This Run is part of our ongoing effort to cure prostate cancer, and to help men with prostate cancer manage their illness with good quality of life and with the support they need to minimize physical and emotional suffering.”
