Gregory Adami Knows Oyster Bay
Gregory Adami called to identify two mystery pictures. For the Feb. 10 mystery picture, last week in the Enterprise Pilot. He said, “It is looking at the way to Beekman Beach. On the left-hand side is the boathouse and the WaterFront Center is on the right.” He is correct.
Belle Santora called and gave a great identification of the Feb. 10 photo. She said, “I know the picture. It’s West End Avenue on the way to the waterfront and the building is where they are doing the work on the Christeen. There is a seagull in the middle of the photo and it looks like the new fire company boathouse is there too.”
While many people have memories of swimming at Beekman Beach, Belle remembers a different scenario. “When I was growing up here, we used to go to Ship’s Point Lane and it was a different kind of beach. When I was six, seven or eight, we had no air conditioning and there were terribly hot summers. My parents would say ‘put on your common bathing suits we’re going to the beach to cool off.’ There would be a parade of kids and neighbors all going there.
“Then as I got older, we went to Stehli Beach. We didn’t go to Beekman Beach because Jakobson Shipyard was there and the water was greasy and oily.”
Gregory Adami also identified the mystery-mystery picture from Feb. 3. Mr. Adami said correctly, “Is the alleyway in between Taby’s and the little clothing store [Chrison & Bellina] off Audrey Avenue.” He guessed it was taken during a concert possibly at an Oyster Festival, but it was actually one of the SunDown Concerts that are an expansion of the longtime Neighborhood Nights. The Neighborhood Nights are held Thursdays during the summer, when local cultural venues invite the community to come and spend the evening enjoying their site – free. They encourage you to bring a picnic lunch and they provide the entertainment.
Linda Benjamin called to identify the mystery-mystery-mystery picture from Jan. 27. She said, “It is the Peter Charles design studio. I live in Oyster Bay and pass it every time.” The photo contained items from Mason Verde that works with Mr. LoPipero of Mill Neck.
