Virginia and Harry Slutter Know Oyster Bay
Virginia Slutter called for she and her husband Harry about the Feb. 17 photo in the Enterprise Pilot. She said, “The picture is the north window at Christ Church in Oyster Bay. That is the AME Zion group that came to sing at the MLK service. They gathered around the piano after the service. We were there.”
Julie Hoplamazian, Christ Church parish administrator said, “The picture is from Christ Church in Oyster Bay. It was taken on Jan. 16 during the diversity service. I was there. I got excited to see we were in the paper.”
She said Christ Church has a very strong music program under musical director Michael Haigler. She said that the Christ Church concerts often held on Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m., are free. The next is Solemn Vespers by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and takes place on Sunday, Feb. 27. She said, “We ask for donations but you don’t have to pay to get in to them. There will be an opera night on March 25. We have a lot going on here at Christ Church and most of it is free.”
“It’s the south transept at Christ church,” said David Layton, husband of the lovely Martha. We had a long and wonderful talk; he is just delightful.
Dr. Susan Peterson-Neuhaus was the next caller. She said, “I think I not only know where the picture was taken, at the side nave, but when, on Martin Luther King’s birthday event. We had a guest church come and sing: AME Zion Church. I think I also took the picture. I don’t know if that disqualifies me to identify the picture of the week.” [It doesn’t.]
It’s the alcove by the chancel at Christ Church in Oyster Bay. People from the AME Zion Church, from just down the street are singing,” said Nancy Hussy.
Billy Minicozzi said it was a gospel church. He added on a sport’s note: “Good luck to the Mets.”
