Winter Family Programs Announced

The Recreation Department’s Winter Program Series, sponsored in part by a generous donation of $1,000 from Garden City Rams Girls’ Lacrosse, continues with the following family shows:

Sunday, March 6: Magic Show

On Sunday, March 6, the Recreation Department in partnership with Rams Girls’ Lacrosse, will sponsor a family magic show by “Tricky Business.” This free show will begin at 1 p.m. Reservations are suggested and you can reserve a seat by calling 465-4075 by Thursday, March 3. All shows begin at 1 p.m. Please check this column for further information as we draw closer to each performance.

Garden City Recreation would again like to thank Gary O’Connor, Henry Beihoff, and the members of the Garden City Rams Girls’ Lacrosse program for their generous contribution to the winter series.

Registration for Spring Pee Wee Sports Sampler Begins

The Garden City Recreation Department will once again offer a spring session of our very poplar Pee-Wee All Sports Sampler program.  This program is open to children ages 4 and 5 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The six-week program, which will begin the week of March 7, has been designed to provide an opportunity to try a wide variety of sports with basic instruction in a fun setting.
Classes will be held in the St Paul’s Field House according to the following schedule: Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
Each class is 55 minutes long. The cost of this six-week program is $75. To register, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. 

Zumba Gold for the Young at Heart

The Recreation Department’s Dance Director Felicia Lovaglio is ready with a new program, Zumba Gold. This latin inspired, dance – fitness workout is geared to active older adult or beginner participant. Classes are 45 minutes in length and will provide basic instruction for a safe and effective total body workout.
Classes will be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:15 am. They will begin Tuesday, March 1 and run for 10 weeks at a cost of $40. To register for this new program, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Adult Art Classes at Cluett Hall

Due to popular demand, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Feb. 18. Classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. The cost of the 10-week program will be $110 (Supplies are bought on your own — a supply list will be handed out at the first class).
This 10-week program will teach the beginner as well as the advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.
Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at their own pace and level of expertise.
Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes.
