Registration for Roller Hockey Begins
The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce its Spring Roller Hockey Program. Whether you played last season or haven’t played in a couple of years, now is the perfect time to sign up and experience all the fun. Our spring season is set to begin in late March. All programs take place at Community Park’s Roller Rink.
Registration Information: In-person registration began on Saturday March 5 at Cluett Hall at St. Pauls. You may register at the Recreation Dept.’s Administrative Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Applications will be available in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall, the website www.gardencity recreation.org and at the Recreation Department’s Administrative office. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.”
A reminder: Each participant is required to wear full equipment at all times. This includes: hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, roller blades, hockey stick, long pants, and a protective cup. A description of each program we offer is as follows:
Learn & Play Program Roller Hockey Clinic for Children Ages 5-7
This eight-week program will begin on Sunday, March 27 and has been designed to introduce the exciting game of Roller Hockey. No experience is required in hockey or rollerskating as this is a Beginners Program. This hour-long clinic will take place on Sunday late afternoons at 3 and 4:15 p.m. The cost of this eight-week program is $65.
Recreation Department Leagues
The Roller Hockey Leagues are broken into age groups. Please pay careful attention as the age groupings and dates/times have changed.
* Our Leagues will begin their season on Friday, March 25 with a Player Evaluation Day*
Mites Division is for ages 6 and 7 who have basic skating skills. Since this division is games only, if your child is new to the sports, you should register them for the learn and play clinic.
Games will take place on Monday afternoons with either a 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. start, depending on your child’s team schedule. The cost of this program is $65.
Junior Division – ages 8 and 9 will play on Friday afternoons at either 4 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. start depending on your child’s team schedule. The cost of this program is $65.
Senior Division – ages 10 through 13 will play on Friday evenings at either 6:45 or 8 p.m. depending on your child’s team schedule. The cost of this program is $65.
High School Open Hockey – for ages 14 to 16. Games will be played on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. in a “pick-up” format. The cost of this program will be $55. Season begins on Sunday, March 27.
Adult Division for ages 30 and over – games will take place on Sunday evenings at 7:15 p.m. with an occasional “Friday night under the Lights.” Games are in “pick up” format. The cost of this program is $55. Season begins on Sunday, March 27.

Zumba Gold for the Young at Heart
The Recreation Department’s Dance Director Felicia Lovaglio is ready with a new program, Zumba Gold. This Latin-inspired, dance – fitness workout is geared to active older adult or beginner participant. Classes are 45 minutes in length and will provide basic instruction for a safe and effective total body workout.
Classes will be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall on Tuesday mornings at 9:15 am. They began Tuesday, March 1 and run for 10 weeks at a cost of $40. To register for this new program, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.
Adult Art Classes at Cluett Hall
Due to popular demand, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Feb. 18. Classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. The cost of the 10-week program will be $110 (Supplies are bought on your own — a supply list will be handed out at the first class).
This 10-week program will teach the beginner as well as the advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.
Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at their own pace and level of expertise.
Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes.
