In a way the announcment below is serendipitous. The Oyster Bay Civic Association and the East Norwich Civic Association have been working together to promote traffic safety in this area.
The police, we are being told are giving out tickets locally for speeding. The county has another initiative that should help the situation: reminding motorists about safety and school buses.
It is called Operation Safe Stop.
The Nassau County Police Department will participate in the State of New York Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee “Operation Safe Stop” on Wednesday, March 30. This program is aimed at educating the public that passing a stopped school bus is both dangerous and illegal as it is a violation of section 1174 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
This State grant will supplement additional patrols throughout all of Nassau County’s eight precincts during this enforcement initiative.
Motorists should be aware that the first-time fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus is a minimum of $250 and five points on your driver’s license. A second conviction within three years results in a minimum fine of $600. A third or subsequent conviction within three years results in a minimum fine of $750.
