Replacement of the Franklin Avenue Crosswalks
This week work began on the replacement of the Franklin Avenue decorative crosswalks. The work will be done in two phases. Phase #1 consists of night work (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) taking place from Seventh Street to Eleventh Street at the intersections of Franklin Avenue, Monday through Friday, with some flexibility in either direction based on the work scheduled. This phase should last for approximately seven nights.
When Phase #1 is completed, there will be a two week period where the base installed will be allowed to set up. After this time period, Phase #2 will begin. During Phase #2, the actual decorative crosswalks will be installed. The work may be done during the day on the side streets and Franklin Avenue (if this is not possible, it will be done at night). This phase is expected to last approximately 12-15 work days.
During working hours there will be lane closures and some minor detouring should be expected. During non-working hours, Franklin Avenue will be open for full use. Please be mindful of this work and be prepared for minor delays and if possible, plan an alternative route. We appreciate your cooperation during this much-needed improvement and will work to complete the project in a timely manner. We are requesting that drivers move slowly through the area as the pavement will be disturbed by the crosswalk construction.
Arbor Day — 2011
Arbor Day is said to date back to antiquity when forests and their trees were venerated during religious rites. Today it is observed in many countries around the world. It was first celebrated in this country in 1872 in Nebraska where trees were planted to counteract deforestation.
The village will celebrate Arbor Day on Thursday, May 4, at 11 a.m. on the village’s park property between Emmet Place and Clinton Road off Stewart Avenue. I look forward to joining the members of the Civic Beautification Committee and classes from Locust Street School who will assist the village arborist, Mr. Michael Didyk, in planting a beautiful Sugar Maple Tree. Within the next few weeks the Parks Division of the Department of Public Works will be planting approximately 110 new trees at locations throughout the Village.
Garden City Again Named ‘Tree City, USA’
It is with great pleasure that I announce that Garden City has once again been awarded the designation of TREE CITY, USA. This is the 22nd year that Garden City has earned this national recognition.
This award, granted by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service with the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes communities which meet detailed, objective standards applied to trees on public property. These standards involve ongoing tree planting, maintenance and preservation of trees and the variety of trees planted per year in the community. Evaluations are made based on four standards: a legally constituted municipal tree body, the adoption of tree ordinances, a comprehensive Community Forestry Program and the observance of Arbor Day.
According to John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation; “We commend Garden City’s elected officials, volunteers and its citizens for providing vital care for its urban forest.” “Trees provide numerous environmental, economical and health benefits to millions of people each day, and we applaud communities that make planting and caring for trees a top priority.”
Board of Trustees Meetings
The next Board of Trustees meetings will be held on Thursday, May 5, and Thursday, May 19, at 8 p.m. The meetings are held in the board room at Village Hall.
