America’s Poets Walk With Walt
The program, which will be held at the birthplace of America’s Good Gray Poet at 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, will be hosted by Whitman Birthplace Writer in Residence George Wallace. The program will pair a nationally prominent visiting writer with one of Long Island’s fine regional poets for a program of poetry and conversation. Individual tickets to the series will be on sale in advance, or at the door, for $15 per ticket or $70 for the full series. National Salvation Army Week
The Salvation Army has partnered with the Melville Chamber of Commerce and Happy Times Café for the week of May 9 to May 13 to help local neighbors. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day that week, the Salvation Army will be in the parking lot of Happy Times Café, 535 Broad Hollow Rd., Melville, with information on volunteer opportunities and collecting new clothing, baby care items, back to school supplies, personal hygiene items, household cleaning supplies and household items. In addition, one of The Salvation Army’s brand new “street fleet” Emergency Services vehicles will be on hand to tour. The public is invited to stop by any of the days and drop off donations or get more information on opportunities with this organization.
