Healthy Living Series At LICM

From 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. drop in for an exploration of the wonderful world of a healthy lifestyle as we help local Girl Scout Krystin Sinclair earn her Gold Award! Each week, fun activities and exercises bring a section of the USDA’s Food Pyramid to life, helping children and parents to make healthy living choices. This week visitors will learn about grains. Meet in our backyard. If inclement weather, session will be held in the Inner Lobby. All ages. Free with museum admission.

Get Hooked on Reading

Join children’s book author, Karen Bonnet, and young adult author, Linda Maria Frank for the first “Get Hooked on Reading!” event, hosted by Casa del Dolce in New Hyde Park, Saturday, July 9 at 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will feature readings, book signings, games, and free treats for all attendees. Parents and children of all ages are welcome. Bring your love of books and adventure, and join family and friends for this fun-filled event, which will offer readings from Bonnet’s exciting middle-grade fiction book, Whale Island and the Mysterious Bones, and Frank’s gripping mystery/romance novel for young adults, The Madonna Ghost.  Bring a friend or loved one—and be prepared to tell us about your favorite book.  Casa del Coca is located at 1200 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park.

Eye on New York Daylily Show

A standard flower show featuring educational exhibits, flower arrangements, table settings and cut scapes of named daylily varieties and daylily seedlings. Daylilies are the showiest perennial of the summer garden and come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Members of The Long Island Daylily Society will be available to answer questions. A limited number of popular daylily plants will be available for sale at bargain prices. The show will be h held from 1:30to 4:30 p.m. in the Horticultural Center, Planting Fields Arboretum, Oyster Bay.  The show is rain or shine. Admission to the flower show is free with parking fee of $8 paid at the entrance gate.

The Town of North Hempstead Department of Parks and Recreation presents, at the Mary Jane Davis Green, on Plandome Road, Manhasset, The Liverpool Shuffle. Folk Rock in the Garden

The Town of North Hempstead Department of Parks and Recreation presents cool sounds in the garden.  Gathering time is 7 p.m. (rain date 7-16)  at Clark Botanic Garden, I.U. Willets Road, Albertson.  Free.  Bring a picnic supper and a chair.

Plaza Theatrical Productions Presents The Wizard of Oz

Plaza Theatrical Productions presents The Wizard of Oz at 7 p.m. at Memorial Park, corner of Lincoln and Wilton Street.  In case of rain, the production will be held at the William Gill Theatre, which is located on the top floor of New Hyde Park Village Hall, corner of New Hyde Park Road and Jericho Turnpike.

Spinner’s Grinners Laughter Yoga in New Hyde Park

Take time to participate in the happiest workout method! –  a series of laughter, breathing and playfulness exercises with many, many health benefits.  You don’t have to be happy, you don’t have to be funny, you don’t even need a sense of humor!   Everyone can do this!  No joke!  We will not be lying on the floor and no knowledge of yoga is necessary.  All activities are done either sitting or standing.  We meet twice per month, on a Wednesday night (for approx. 1 hr, 10 min.).   Meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp.  Ages:  13-80.   Admission fee:  $10 per meeting.  Includes laughter yoga class, lending library of meaningful books, CD’s and DVD’s, and monthly newsletter at no extra charge. Ask about membership – $40 savings.  To attend the laughter yoga class and for further details, contact Rosanne T. Long Island Daylily Society to Host Sale and Clinic

The Long Island Daylily Society will present a daylily sale and clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until sold out at SUNY Farmingdale, Route 110 and Melville Road on the Great Lawn by Roosevelt Hall. All plants have been grown in members’ gardens so they are northern hardy and healthy. There will be traditional large-flowered varieties as well as miniatures, doubles and spiders. Plants of all colors including red, yellow, orange, gold, pink, purple and melon will be on the sale tables. Hundreds of plants will be available. Long Island Daylily members will be presenting a daylily clinic and workshop to answer all your questions on growing day lilies in your own garden. Members will also be present at the sales tables to offer assistance. The daylily has been called the “perfect perennial.” By careful selection of varieties, a day lily garden can provide continuous bloom throughout the summer.

The 17th Annual William F. Kelly Memorial Golf Classic

The 17th Annual William F. Kelly Memorial Golf Classic, sponsored by the Gladiator Fund, to benefit Jennver Cave, Age 18, daughter of Nancy Wilder-Cave, Class of NHP Memorial ’71, who has a neurological disability,  will be held at the Eisenhower Park-Blue Course, located at Merrick and Stewart Avenue, East Meadow.  Registration and Continental Breakfast at 6:30 a.m. with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.  Dinner is at 2 p.m. at the New Hyde Park Inn, 214 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park.  Cost is $170 and after Aug. 5-$185 to include 18 holes of gold, cart, breakfast, dinner and a 4-hour open bar.  $75 if you only want to attend diner, which begins at 2 p.m..  Proper attire required, no jeans.  Soft spikes only.
