The summer is a great time for students to relax and recharge for another school year. Unfortunately, the long summer vacation erodes the knowledge, skills and concepts gained during the school year.
It is reported that the average student regresses one month by the end of summer vacation. In fact, the loss compounds over time. To help prevent further regression, our teachers and schools have organized summer reading assignments; put together reading lists; and have added new math assignments for students.
Our goal is not punitive, but a proactive attempt to minimize the summertime loss. We hope our students keep on top of this work each week – a little bit each day – rather than a frenzied rush on Labor Day weekend.
In addition, the Island Trees Library is open Monday – Saturday during the summer. We hope all of our students take advantage of this great community resource. The library continues to offer all sorts of children programs, as well as reading incentives. We encourage all of our families to make weekly visits.
If you have any questions about the summer assignments, please check the school website or contact the school principal.
