NetBlast Media Proposes to Bring ‘Varsity Scoreboard’ to District
On Wednesday, Aug. 10 about 26 residents, parents and other community members attended the regular meeting of the Levittown Board of Education at the Levittown Memorial Education Center (LMEC).
The members of the Levittown Board of Education resolved (5-0) to approve the budget of the necessary claims and expenditures in Levittown Union Free School District. The breakdown is as follows: $197,907,475 for School Purpose and $6,985,156 for Library Purpose for a total of $204,892,631. The remainder of the adopted budget $131,874,828 is to be levied upon the taxable property of the school district.
Representatives from NetBlast Media addressed the Board of Education with a proposal to initiate a media program called “Varsity Scoreboard” where the company, sponsored by local businesses, will broadcast Levittown School District sports and engage students with media interests in helping with the recording and production of each sporting event.
The service would be free, and feature an online library, available 24/7 of the sporting events. They proposed to initially cover 30 sporting events throughout the upcoming school year, and partner with its sponsors to offer scholarships to selected students. Some of their sponsors already include Sherman Specialty, Chartwells Food Service, SoNu Beverages and Brittany Beauty School.
NetBlast Media’s producer gave some suggestions of the range of production frills that the school could choose including student co-hosting with professional athletes, an entertainment stage, camera crew assisting, pre-game shows, and giveaways. A decision was not made by the Board of Education.
Some discussion was exchanged about the price increases recommended by Chartwells for the a la carte menu. While the other items such as chips, snacks and water were acceptable, the company’s proposal to raise the price of a second entrée from the current price of $1 to $1.50 was not. The Board suggested a second entrée cost $1.25.
Several gifts were acknowledged including: a check in the amount of $138.39 for the East Broadway Elementary School Broadway Sunshine Fund, given by Dover Gourmet Corp., DBA Quick Snack Foods of Plainview; a tree to be donated to Abbey Lane Elementary School in memory of a former Abbey Lane student, given by Kimberly Perticaro of Bellmore; and NetApp hardware support for the Computer department, given by Network Appliances & Data Storage of Baldwin.
The Board voted to maintain the Driver Education tuition $470 per semester for the 2011-2012 school year. The District has made efforts to increase eligibility, while also reducing the costs by $80 from the previous year.
The next regular Levittown School District Board of Education meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Levittown Memorial Education Center at 150 Abbey Lane.
