Letter: We Deserve an Open Process, Not a Brush-Off

At the Town of North Hempstead’s Board Meeting on July 12, the agenda included a hearing regarding the purchase and restoration of the private Roslyn Country Club which would impact all town residents tax-wise. At that time, there was a hearing, both pro and con, and John Kaiman admittedly said they do not have all their figures together yet on this, and that this would remain on the agenda and there would be a hearing at the Aug. 23 meeting.

Upon arriving at the Aug. 23 meeting, this item was indeed listed on the agenda to have a hearing and many interested town residents were there for that specific reason. At the beginning of the meeting, John Kaiman said, in so many words, that although there are many people present who would like to speak on this, you won’t have an opportunity to do so.

As a town resident who opposes this additional tax burden (as we have our own pool clubs already), I find it unconscionable that negotiations are going on between the town and the owner of the property in secret. We, the taxpayers of the town deserve a completely transparent and open process, not the brush-off that John Kaiman gave to those who came to be heard on this item which was clearly listed on the agenda.
