It’s hard to believe, but Sonic the Hedgehog is 20 years old this year, and for that special anniversary, Sega created a free Sonic app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The speedy hedgehog made his debut in 1991—yes, that long ago—and although some other titles have stolen the spotlight over the years, Sonic will always be an iconic game.
As part of their special 20th anniversary, Sega released the free companion application for the two Apple products. The app offers updated news, downloads, trials, and of course, a game.
Sonic lovers can also compare scores and compete against other gamers from around the world.
Those who started using the free app already have given it some pretty good reviews. As of Saturday, the app was given a rating of 3 ½ out of 4 stars.
Meanwhile, Sonic Generations is scheduled to come out in November on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It will also be released for the Nintendo 3DS system, according to Sega’s website.
Excitement is growing in Europe where Sega will release a Sonic collector’s edition to commemorate the anniversary. The special edition includes a collectible figure, gold ring, and a “20 Years of Sonic Art” book, that gives fans some never before seen images of the famed video game character.
Also included is a documentary titled: “History of Sonic: Birth of an Icon,” that chronicles the life of Sonic.
The collector’s edition will only be available in Europe and Australia, Sega said.
