Congratulations to Alexandra Bruno, a senior at Garden City High School, for being named this year’s first News 12/MSG Varsity Scholar Athlete. The Scholar Athlete program highlights outstanding scholar athletes attending Long Island high schools. “Alex,” pictured here with Principal Nanine Cuttitta (at left) and Nancy Kalafus, the district’s director of athletics and physical education, becomes Garden City’s 34th athlete to be honored as a News 12 Scholar Athlete. The broadcast of her television interview aired on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
“We were thrilled to learn that Alexandra Bruno was selected as News 12’s first Scholar Athlete of the school year,” commented Ms. Kalafus. “Alex is an outstanding student in the classroom and on the playing field. We are very proud of her many achievements.”
A two-sport athlete coached by Diane Chapman, Alex is the 2012 team captain for the 2011 State Champion lacrosse team and the 2011 State Finalist field hockey team. In 2011 alone, she was named to the U.S. Lacrosse First Team and All-Academic Team, received an ESPNHS All-American Honorable Mention, was named to MSG Varsity’s Tri-State Second Team, an ESPN Rise Underclassman to Watch and an East Region Player of the Week, named to Inside Lacrosse’s Rising Seniors Watchlist, Newsday’s All-Long Island Second Team, and 2011 All-County.
In field hockey, Alex was named Newsday’s 2011 Long Island Field Hockey Player to Watch, 2010 Nassau County Player of the Year and All-Long Island, MSG’s Top 31 Long Island Athletes to Watch and 2010 Long Island Player of the Year, named to the 2010 NFHCA High School All-Region Team, and named 2010 All-State.
In the classroom, Alex maintains an unweighted average of 95. She is a member of the National and German Honor Societies, the Mathematics Team, and the Miracle Club, and has volunteered her time to assist with the Special Olympics. Alex also conducts field hockey clinics for third through eighth grade girls.
Next year, Alex aspires to play lacrosse for Princeton University.
