Belle Santora Knows Oyster Bay
Belle Santora was looking at the Mystery Picture in the Sept. 29 issue of the Enterprise Pilot and saw the photo from the week before. “Look at those shiny shoes. The picture was really fun. [It was taken of the firefighters standing during the 9/11 ceremony at the Western Waterfront.]
“Now what this week’s picture looks like to me is that building at the Western Waterfront where they have the Christeen. That’s what I think it is. I’m so tired of being right. I’m 100 years – I should be right,” she said laughing.
Hank Tiska said, “The new Mystery Picture of Sept. 29 shows shipwright Dave Short’s truck parked in the yard at WaterFront Center’s Building J (on West End Avenue).”
He is correct.
We know because last week’s photo was taken by Gregory Druhak and he provided the information about it. He said, “At about 11 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 24 a small truck from Freedom (Montville) Maine quietly pulled into the J-Building area by the Waterfront Center. Master Shipwright David Short stepped out and shook hands with both Eric Holohan of the well-known design firm of McCurdy and Rhodes; and David Relyea of the Frank M. Flower & Sons Shellfish Farming Company.
“While he was in town only for the day, Mr. Short, who did the original restoration of oyster sloop Christeen in the late 1990s, will be back. This signals the start of the active phase of the Ida May wooden ship building project. Volunteers will be needed and additional funding to continue the project is to be raised,” explained Mr. Druhak. More information will be coming about the project.
Tony Pilla of Anniston, Alabama recognized the photo of Sept. 29. He said, “the building looks like the side entrance to the boat repair shop by Jakobson’s Shipyard near Beekman’s Beach. Looks like a little hint with the truck parked by the door.”
Billy Minicozzi, too, identified the photo as being a warehouse or a factory building. He, too, had news. The Bayville Haunted Fire House opens on Friday, Oct. 14. It runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31. The hours are Friday and Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. on Sundays, from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Halloween, from 10 to 9 p.m.
Keep reading the Enterprise Pilot. You never know what great information you will get from the Mystery Picture!
