THE SMASHING PUMPKINS @ TERMINAL 5
As one of the totemic acts to come out of the 1990s, Smashing Pumpkins has taken quite the low profile in the first decade of the new millennium. And while creative capo Billy Corgan has slowly reentered the public eye via Teardrop Through a Kaleidoscope, a 44-track project that’s been fed to the public one song at a time through the band’s website, the next few months promise to raise the Pumpkins’ profile considerably. Not only is Corgan culling a number of songs of Kaleidoscope to release as a proper album called Oceania next year, he’s also been overseeing a reissue of the band’s back catalog starting with Gish and Siamese Dream that will continue well into 2012 and 2013. With Corgan remaining as the only original member, expect a lengthy live trip through the Chicago band’s extensive canon. With Fancy Space People & Light FM. Tuesday, 10.18

Cyndi Lauper/Dr. John @ NYCB Theatre at Westbury
Beneath the kooky persona she crafted for herself dating back to MTV’s early days up through appearances on Mad About You and Celebrity Apprentice, it’s easy to lose sight of how formidable a musician Cyndi Lauper is. Last year’s Memphis Blues found her delving into a genre the Queens native is not normally known for playing. But rather than being a bus(wo)man’s holiday, these 11 songs find Lauper playing alongside legendary Hi Records sidemen and easily holding her own alongside the likes of Charlie Musselwhite, B.B. King and Ann Peebles.  —DGdR
