Mayor’s Report: March 6, 2012

St. Patrick’s Day Parade – March 4 – New Route

This year the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, formerly held in Garden City for many years, has been relocated to Mineola by the organizers because of the cost imposed by our Village for Police overtime. However, the organizers, the Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk & Queens, Inc., continue to invite us to march and/or view the parade, which will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

The parade will assemble at noon on Courthouse Drive (in front of the Irish Monument), near the County Courthouse. The parade will then proceed to Old Country Road, left onto Old Country Road and turning right onto Mineola Boulevard proceeding north to Jericho Turnpike. This year the reviewing stand will be located on the south side of Jericho Turnpike between Mineola Boulevard and Willis Avenue in Mineola.

Village Election – Tuesday, March 20, 2012

The annual village election will be held on Tuesday, March 20, from noon until 9 p.m. at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Ave. Village residents will be voting for the following candidates:

John J. Watras – Trustee – two-year term
Nicholas P. Episcopia – Trustee – two- year term
Andrew J. Cavanaugh – Trustee – two-year term
Brian C. Daughney – Trustee – two-year term

Since the incorporation of the village in 1919, members of the board of trustees in Garden City have been elected by a nonpartisan vote of residents in accordance with the policies of the Community Agreement.

Emergency Management Radio Tested Weekly

Each week, Garden City along with all villages within Nassau County, perform a “radio-test” with the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management Office (NCOEM) to ensure that their assigned radio is working properly. These radios operate at an 800 MHz frequency and have been in operation for the past several years as a result of funding from former State Senator Michael Balboni. In the event of a major disaster where normal radio communications were disrupted each village would have the ability to communicate with each other directly as well as with the NCOEM.

Absentee Ballot Applications

Absentee Ballot applications to be used in conjunction with the General Village Election on March 20, are available at the Village Hall, 351 Stewart Ave. Applications must be received by the village clerk by March 13 if the ballot is to be mailed. For personal application, the deadline is March 19.
