The video was released May 3 on MTV, and is proving quite popular with over 2 million views since going viral Thursday.
Bieber took to Twitter to share the video along with a message, “now..here is the video –
#BOYFRIEND – hope u like it,” he tweeted.
Bieber’s new video features the singer following a love interest while also mixing in artistic shots and dance scenes.
The video was directed by Collin Tilley, who previously worked with the singer for his music video “U Smile” back in 2010. It was filmed in California in late March.
The 18-year-old’s song featured in the video “Boyfriend” is off of his upcoming album “Believe,” which will be released later this year. The single comes as the lead for his third studio album and was produced by Mike Posner and Mason Levy.
The song was first previewed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 1 and later released in full on March 26. It was a huge success, as Bieber hits typically are, debuting at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
Though the song features a new, more mature sound for the star, it seemed to be very reminiscent of works by other stars. As we’ve previously reported, the song has earned comparisons to early 1990s Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Beyonce works.
In the weeks leading up to its release, the singer has been amping up excitement by releasing teasers for the new video. He released three teasers in total.
The most recent one showed a silhouette of the Biebs, who can be seen standing in front of a full moon, snapping his fingers in a Jackson-like pose. The tease seems to feature nods to music legend Michael Jackson, which Bieber hinted at when he tweeted earlier this month, “Meeting for the #BELIEVETOUR – gonna be epic. #MJInspiration.”
The second teaser had Bieber submerged in water and in front of a burning swing while the first has him with women’s hands all over him.
