From May 21 to May 23 White Avenue was paved from Lakeville Road to Hillside Boulevard which is a five-block stretch.
Despite six years (2006-2012) of my advocating for the paving of the entire length of White Avenue from Lakeville Road to Cherry Lane (a nine- block stretch) only the eastern section of the road was paved and the western section (Hillside Blvd to Cherry Lane) was excluded.
I pleaded the case many times with Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Councilwoman Lee Seeman and the Department of Highways Superintendent Thomas Tiernan, but to no avail. This entire road was last paved in 1981 during the last two years of the Michael J. Tully administration.
So, why was only five-ninths of the road paved, when obviously the entire length requires paving after 31 years of wear? The life expectancy of a cut-through road, such as this, is 25 years. The road paving list is a five-year list and the western section is still not on the list.
Do we have to wait another five years when this part of the road will be 36-years-old? How did this happen, after I pursued this so vigorously? Why was four-ninths of the road, in this horrible condition, literally passed over?
Please, someone from the Town of North Hempstead contact me and explain this neglect. I was blown off, to a great degree, by everyone involved in this project and the last time that a town official ignored my pleas on another matter, I ended up having to run for the council seat that year.
I will do that again to correct our infrastructure deficiencies if it becomes necessary to do so.
Please do not leave your constituents angry and dismayed over this oversight. Please make this situation whole. Don’t allow this to become known as the Town of North Hempstead’s five-ninths of a road principle. Let’s get this done right and soon. Make it happen.
