Summer Gazebo Concerts Series
Garden City Recreation is pleased to announce its upcoming concerts series at the gazebo on the village green. The schedule is as follows:

August 2: Linda Ipanema and the Dixie Cats
Concerts are free and open to Garden City residents and their guests. In the event of bad weather, all shows will move indoors to St. Paul’s Cluett Hall at 295 Stewart Ave.
Summer Zumba
Zumba will continue through the with classes offered on the following days:
Mondays at 7:30 p.m. or Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.
Classes will be held in St. Paul’s Senior Center at a cost of $81. Class size is limited. Please visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. to register for these classes.
Zumba Gold For Seniors
“Zumba Gold for Seniors” will continue through the summer with classes offered on the following days:
Mondays at 6:30 p.m. or Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.
Classes will be held in St. Paul’s Senior Center at a cost of $45. Class size is limited so this summer class will be available for seniors only. Visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. to register for these classes.

Registration for summer camps has started and camps are filling rapidly. Have you sent in your registrations yet? The recreation department is offering many camps for ages 3 ½ to 14 years. Summer Tennis For Kids
The recreation department’s tennis camp program offers children aged 4 to 12 an opportunity to learn or advance their tennis skills while working with experienced tennis pros in a fun setting. Camps are set by age and children will be grouped according to ability within their camp. All sessions are held at the Community Park Tennis Center. The age of the child at the start of the session will determine which session the child may attend and proof of age may be required. Please read the information below to determine which camp your child is eligible to attend.
Equipment needed: flat-soled sneakers and a tennis racket
All camps will follow the same session dates:

Peewee Camp – For ages 4 – 6. This 55-minute camp will teach tennis skills to the younger child with the use of fun drills and games. Time: 9 – 9:55 a.m. or 1 – 1:55 p.m. (please list preference) Cost: $50
Novice Camp – For ages 6 and 7. This camp will teach serving, rallying, and the basics of a tennis game, keeping it fun for the younger tennis set. Time: 1 – 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 – 4 p.m. (please list preference) Cost: $75
Junior Camp – For ages 8 – 12. For all levels of experience, this 2 ¼ hour camp will group players by ability so that everyone can move to the next level. Time: 10 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Cost: $90
Junior Camp Plus – For the child aged 8 to 12 who is looking for a full day of tennis. This camp will provide tennis instruction in the morning, followed by lunchtime and a special activity, then ending the day with tennis matches. Children must bring their lunch to this camp. Time: 10 a.m. – 2:15 p.m. Cost: $200

U.S. Sports Institute Multi-Sport Camp & Soccer Camp For Ages Five – 14
The department is working in conjunction with the U.S. Sports Institute to offer several programs this summer. Experience over 15 different sports in one week in a fun and exciting setting at the Multi-Sport Camp. This camp gives younger participants the experience of 12 sports in a week. Instruction will be given in each sport culminating in a game situation. After a half-hour lunch break, the children will return to participate in U.S.S.I.’s Olympic Games and World Cup. Participants in the full-day camp will receive all of the above plus several additional sports and challenges.
The camp will be held at St. Paul’s and is divided into a half or full-day camp as follows:
Multi-Sports Week Of June 25
Half-day morning camp for ages 5–14 (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) Cost: $169
Half-day afternoon camp for ages 5–14 (1 to 4 p.m.) Cost: $139
Full-day camp for ages 6–14 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Cost: $199
Multi-Sports Week Of August 13

They will also be offering the Sports Institute’s soccer camp this summer. This program is broken into two divisions:
World Cup Camp
This soccer day camp pushes the fun factor for children age 5 to 12 while improving their soccer skills. Each child will be assigned a World Cup country for the week. They will then learn soccer skills from a different country each day and put them to the test with fun challenges and games.
Travel Academy
Where champions are made. This unique day camp gives travel soccer players ages 9–14 training just like the youth development academies in Europe without having to leave home.
During the week, players will enjoy various soccer activities used by professional clubs including speed and agility training, and small-sided futsal sessions. Players will also perform daily skills challenges and complete a personal progress report for the week. Official scrimmages will be played under the guidance of U.S. Sport Institute’s professional coaches, ensuring the player’s understanding the tactics of soccer. While this camp is geared for the serious player, the emphasis is on learning in an enjoyable environment that promotes self-confidence.
Please note – The soccer camps will be held behind the Garden City pool and will include a pool swim if you register for full day.
World Cup Camp Week Of August 6

Boys And Girls Lacrosse Camp
For children entering first through sixth grades in September. Here is an opportunity for youngsters who are residents of the Village of Garden City to learn the techniques of catching, throwing, scooping, and shooting through fun drills. They will also learn the rules of the game by scrimmaging. This is a basic camp where no experience is necessary and equipment is provided.
When: Week of July 2 – 6 (4 days, no class on July 4)
Where: St. Paul’s field
Time: 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. for children entering first and second grades, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for children entering third – sixth grades
Fee: $ 75
Youth Baseball Camp
The recreation department will again conduct a summer baseball camp for boys and girls who are residents of the Village of Garden City.
This instructional program is offered to boys and girls in first through sixth grades. The camp will focus on individual skill development, and the importance of playing together as a team.
Youngsters in each age category will be divided into appropriate skill levels and will receive group instruction.
Equipment Needed: Baseball glove, sneakers or rubber cleats
When: Week of July 16 – 19, Week of July 23 – 26
Where: Community Park’s baseball fields
Time: Choice of 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for children entering first through third grades, 11 – 1 p.m. for children entering fourth through sixth grades
Fee: $75
Theater Workshop
A theater workshop will once again be conduced for children ages 6 – 13 who are residents of the Village of Garden City.
Studying acting helps develop social and personal skills. It also increases poise and confidence. During these workshops, the children will learn drama exercises, improvisation, and staging while having fun.

When: Week of July 9 – 12, Week of July 16 – 19
Time: 6-8 years from 9:30- 10:30 a.m., 9-13 years from 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

U.S. Sports Institute’s Sports Squirts And Soccer Squirts
The department is working in conjunction with the U.S. Sports Institute to offer two of its popular programs again this summer. The Sports Squirts Program has been designed to introduce children age 3 to 5 to a variety of sports in a safe, structured environment. Soccer Squirts does the same while teaching the sport of soccer. All games and activities will encompass hand/eye coordination, balance, agility and movement – all key factors to the early development of children in sport. These programs will be offered on the St. Paul’s fields.

Mad Science Camps
Mad Science of Long Island is a company that provides a learning experience in a camp setting. Residents of the Village of Garden City entering grades two through five are encouraged to attend. Topics and details for each camp are listed below. For any science camp, all checks should be made payable directly to “Mad Science of Long Island.” To register, visit the recreation department’s website at www.gardencityrecreation.org or pick one up at the office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Registration is by mail only until June 5.
Session One Topic: Crazy Chemworks – Entering Grades Two – Six
Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist. These four half-days of chemistry are packed solid with cool reactions. Campers put on goggles and change liquid to solid and back again. They get to handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules, and pick up some tricks on chemical changes.
When: Week of June 25 – 28
Where: St. Paul’s Cluett Hall
Time: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.
Fee: $180
Session Two Topic: Robots And Reactions – Entering Grades Two – Five
Build your own robot and learn the incredible things that robots can do. Create your own scientific reactions while learning about the universe at the four-day program.
When: Week of July 2, no class July 4

Time: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.
Fee: $80 plus a separate $15 materials fee
Session Three Topic: Forensic Science – Entering Grades Two – Six
Focus on the science of forensics in this hands-on look at crime scenes. Campers will use science to connect the dots and help sniff out suspects as they learn about the science of sleuthing.

Time: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.

Session Four Topic: Robot Engineers – Entering Grades Three – Six
When: Week of August 20 – 23

Session Five Topic: Science in Motion – Entering Grades 1-4
Science and engineering go hand-in-hand as our campers discover what machines and nature have in common. Camps will build, move and play through science in this four-day program.
When: Week of Aug. 27 – 30

Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Fee: $180
Community Park’s Miniature Golf Course
Affordable family fun is right around the corner, so don’t forget to visit the Recreation Department’s state-of-the-art miniature golf course. The 18-hole course is located behind the Garden City pool and is filled with challenges galore that will delight mini-golfers of all ages.
Party packages for birthdays or other occasions are offered. Call Garden City Community Park at 483-2525 for party planning.
