Actress Katie Holmes has filed for divorce with actor Tom Cruise, officially seeking to end their six-year marriage.

Katie Holmes’ attorney Jonathan Wolfe broke the news to People, stating, “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

One of Tom Cruise’s representatives told People, “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.”

TMZ reported that Holmes filed for divorce on June 28 in New York, and wants sole legal custody of their six-year-old daughter, Suri. Holmes is also asking for a division of property.

Cruise, 49, famously declared his love for Holmes, 33, on Oprah Winfrey’s show in 2005, and the couple married in a 15th-century Odescalchi castle in Italy in November, 2006.

Cruise told Playboy last May how much he still loves Holmes. “She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you’d see it,” he said. “I’m just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special.”

The last time the couple was seen in public was February, but Holmes was notably absent from Cruise’s recent press coverage from his latest movie Rock of Ages. Cruise was seen earlier this week in Iceland filming a role in Oblivion.

This was Cruise’s third marriage; the first with Nicole Kidman whom he had two children, and second with Mimi Rogers. This was Holmes’ first marriage, although she was previously engaged with American Pie actor Chris Klein.
