2 Charged With Gun, Drug Possession in Island Park

Two men were arrested in Island Park late Saturday after police observed numerous safety hazards.

According to police, officers observed 25-year-old Jesus Nunez, of Island Park driving a vehicle unsafely onto Baker Court and not wearing a seat belt Saturday at around 10 p.m. According to cops, the vehicle’s stereo was extremely loud, several items were hanging from his rearview mirror, and seated in the front passenger seat was Jerome Harkless, age 21 of Long Beach. Cops stopped the car on Railroad Place, where officers say they observed Nunez in possession of a brown cigarette containing a substance believed to be marijuana and later determined that he was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license. After being questioned, Harkless produced a bag containing a substance believed to be marijuana from his pant’s pocket. Both men were removed from the vehicle, when police found a loaded .45 caliber handgun on Harkless. Both men were placed under arrest.

Nunez was charged with Unsafe Backing On a Roadway, Driver Operation of a Motor Vehicle Without Seatbelt, Loud Amplification System, Obstructed Driver’s View, Unlicensed Operation and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. He will appear at First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Harkless was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and a Long Beach warrant for Riding a Bicycle on Sidewalk. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday, July 29, 2012.
