Editorial: Think Pink

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – and perhaps if you were wondering why nearly every professional football player has been sporting pink equipment these past few weeks, there’s your answer.

I’ve overheard a few people say that this year’s display of support throughout pro football has become over-the-top, but for a cause like this, I say the more ostentatious the better.

Recently I saw that a town painted some of its street lines and fire hydrants pink. At first, I thought it was a waste of resources but soon realized that every person who notices the color change will ask why – and that’s a great step toward raising awareness and spreading a vital message nationwide.

Though the street lines, fire hydrants and football gear will eventually return to their traditional looks, it’s up to us to remember the importance of early detection and regular visits to our health care professionals.
