On Friday, Oct. 19, the Farmingdale Fire Department (FFD) held a fire prevention open house at the Main Street headquarters for residents and community members. Members of the department handed out pamphlets, magnets and videos, all with the fire safety message.
In addition, the Bethpage Fire Department shared their safe house, a training and demonstration tool used to teach children about fire safety. The safe house was filled with “training smoke” so children could go inside the house, and crawl on the floor to get out, as they would in the event of a real fire.
Farmingdale firefighter Jared Arlin told the Farmingdale Observer that it is important for fire departments hold informational open houses and safety demonstrations “to educate the people about the importance of fire safety and how to prevent car accidents and fires.”
FFD then demonstrated how a vehicle would be disassembled if they needed to extract a driver or passenger, by removing all of its doors. Then they demonstrated how a vehicle, fully engulfed in flames would be contained and extinguished. This not only showed the damage that a fire can do, but it showed how quickly a fire can spread, and what to do in the event of an emergency.
