Editorial: So Long, Sandy

Residents across Long Island scrambled to return to normalcy following superstorm Sandy, though the task proved to be more difficult for some than others.

Nearly a week after the storm, approximately 250,000 residents were in the dark, while thousands more had suffered worse losses, including vehicles, homes, pets and family members.

Fortunately for our area, the distance from the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean proved to be our greatest protection against Sandy, as flooding and fire have greatly complicated life for our friends to the north and south. Keep those less fortunate in mind and consider donating or volunteering some clothes, food or time.

Remember that patience and compassion will ultimately lead us through this setback. And whether I was waiting on line for gas or driving through the darkened streets, I observed plenty of both from my neighbors and strangers.
