Victorian Tea

Queen Victoria made afternoon tea a national pass time. It was a time that friends and family got together to enjoy each other and fine food. Come to the Victorian Tea at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Garden City from 2 – 4 p.m.  Enjoy delicious tea sandwiches, scones with jellies and clotted crème, cookies and a hot tea while being entertained by pianist Joe McAuley. Saint Joseph School Open House

Saint Joseph School of Garden City, which is devoted to integrating the teachings of the Catholic faith within a creative and stimulating learning environment, is hosting an open house from 10:30 a.m. to noon for nursery through Grade 8. Winthrop-University Hospital’s Free Mini-Med School

Attention adults: do you have an affinity for science and learning? Not doing much this winter? If so, then come hear from experts from Winthrop-University Hospital as you learn how the body functions.
 Winthrop’s free Mini-Med School Adult Education program began on Wednesday, Jan. 16 and will be offered for a total of five weekly sessions through Wednesday, Feb. 13. Topics and sessions include: Jan. 30 – The Reproductive And Gastrointestinal Systems; Feb. 6 – Dermatology And Ophthalmology; Feb. 13 – The Respiratory System And Preventative Medicine. Classes will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. in the Dr. Martin Spatz Conference Center, located in the lower level of the main hospital at 259 First St. in Mineola. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. Creative Cups

The popular, life-affirming event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by becoming a sponsor. Submitted creations will be included in the auction/gala (to be held on March 14, 2013 at Adelphi University in Garden City). Garden City Public Library Movie Screenings

Friends of the Garden City Public Library invite resident adults to free movies on Mondays at 1:30 p.m., from January through April 2013 at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St. Monthly movies themes are: January “Broadway to Hollywood,” February “Love is in the Air,” March “It’s a Disaster,” and April “Great Books.” Movie dates are: Jan. 28; Feb. 4 & 11; March 4, 11 & 18; April 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29. Pick up a copy of the movie flyer at the library.

Monthly Cancer Support Group

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group will meet on Monday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.)
The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support.

Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave., in Westbury. There are no dues or fees.
