Irish eyes, and for that matter, all other eyes, were smiling on St. Patrick’s Day in Farmingdale. The First Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held on Main Street and a huge crowd attended the event. Dressed in green, crowds lined the sidewalks as the parade traveled south from North Side School to the Village Green.
“We had a great amount of people here,” commented Mayor Ralph Ekstrand, who was a co-grand marshal. “Everything is festive. We’re looking forward to people going to dine on Main Street with the specials and we’re looking to have a great Irish Day.”
Elected officials, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, business leaders, the Dalers kickline and the Farmingdale Fire Department were all part of the parade. A green line was painted down Main Street. Parade goers from Farmingdale and other places crowded the sidewalks to catch a glimpse of what will likely become a Long Island tradition.
“I’m so glad they did this,” remarked Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto. “It was needed. People don’t have to travel into the city and they’ll shop locally.”
While people shopped locally, it wasn’t only two legged creatures who got in on the fun. Many pet parents brought their pooches, dressed in green attire to the parade. And they weren’t event Irish Setters.
