Editorial: Game On

With the NHL season winding down and the Rangers and Islanders clinching playoff spots, the timing couldn’t have been better for the Garden City Recreation Department to unveil its renovated roller rink. Built under the auspices of a $750,000 bond, the new rink is very much a community-driven effort thanks to the voters passing the bond and local businesses—starting with main sponsor TCBY of 7th Street and followed by Play It Again Sports, Grimaldi’s, Uptown Grille, the Garden City Grille, Bear Creek Country Kitchens, Seventh Street Gourmet Deli and Caterers and Sportloft all lining up to buy ad space on the new sideboards. A special thanks should go out to Kevin Ocker, chair of the Board of Commissioners of Cultural and Recreational Affairs, for spearheading this project. Because of everyone pulling together, the village has yet another amenity that will be available to 350 hockey players and any other residents wishing to use the rink during open time. As the saying goes, a bad day of hockey beats pretty much a good day of practically anything else. So lace ’em up.
