According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,666, 290 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2013 with roughly 580,350 people projected to die from this disease in the same calendar year. To that end, the local chapter of Swim Across America, Inc. (SAA) recently did its part to raise money to fight this scourge. Last month, it raised nearly $13,000 that is going to wind up benefitting a number of organizations including the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the MIRACLE Foundation Pavilion at Mercy Medical Center and the Feinstein Institute of North Shore-LIJ. Adding to the local flavor we donations by local businesses (the Seventh Street Deli, The Pear Tree, The Burger Spot) and families (the Zarriellos, the Heaneys, the Germanos). The event wound up being yet another example of community largesse yielding benefits on a scale that goes far beyond the village borders.
